I always try to ask my student what works better for them so that i can try to adapt and encourage in a way they requested..

Re: NPL VN3

VN3 I get them to identify landmarks when they're clipping up for procedures or doing radiogrpahy, pinpointing landmarks on the animal or on radiograph. Use it as tutorials. I also have a blank sheet with pictures of cat, dog, horse, rabbit etc with lines coming out at certain points so they can write in the terms of the landmark.

Re: NPL VN3

Is it that the student has logged what they hope is enough to be deemed "competent" and you want more in order to be sure of that or are we talking about starting to log and cases in general?

Depending on which it is I think I would speak to your student and your college and see how they are with the rest of their studies and maybe come up with a plan between you. The colleges are pretty good at setting deadlines for NPL completion. As someone mentioned it could be that they don't understand the computer or the NPL and how it works. Or that they genuinely think they have logged enough. Are they keeping a note book of everything they do or that "witnesses" see them do?

If you are employed first and foremost as a VN and then have to be a clinical coach it can be very hard finding the time to chase students who should really know what is expected of them if they had a September start. I would have a tutorial find out if all is ok and speak to the college.

If you have done your best to help, to be approachable, have tried to set targets, to demonstrate and explain things, sought help from your college and maybe the practice principal, and your student still isn't making progress then I think its time for you to step back. Let them come to you, (they will). It's their work, their qualification and their life.

You can become very stressed with all this - I don't think its fully appreciated how stressful being a clinical coach is. You want your student to do well but sometimes they don't seem to realise this. Sometimes you have great students, full of enthusiasm to learn and grateful and pleased for everything you try to do for them. Sometimes you don't. Everyone is different. You have to work out how each one works and learns. No mean feat whilst trying to be a nurse in a busy practice as well, especially if you have more than one person to train.

Hope you get sorted!.

Maybe give her some sort of target each week? Plus plenty of praise in front of the bosses when she has completed something- everyone likes to be thought of in a good light and it may just do the trick. Sure you will get there in the end.

Re: NPL VN3

Okay, the old adage of "you can lead to horse to water but you cannot make it drink" would appear to apply here...however, having said that, the horse might be inclined to quench his/her thirst if you found out what is preventing him/her from doing so...

In this case it might be the difficulty of access to a computer (time/location, for instance), or the embarrassment of doing work in the view of others and feeling pressure to perform, difficulty using a computer... Or, it could be that they habitually leave everything until the last minute, (unlike others, perhaps you? who prepare in advance to keep 'ahead'). If this is so then leading by your example and showing, indeed helping (to start with) as to how there is an advantage to having things done early/earlier. This might encourage a change in attitude? Or if this is a change in attitude to his/her previous performance, is there anything distracting/troubling him/her in or outside of work? Can you be an 'Agony Aunt' for a bit and see if this helps? I did find it useful for one of my students to get them to do the things they hated or felt inadequate at doing (and ignored doing) first with the carrot of having the 'treat' of then attempting something they liked or could do well. The pride in achieving was well felt (by us both) and this encouraged her future attempts at difficult issues. When all is said and done, it may be that he/she has lost their way and a timely reminder of what they will lose if they shilly-shally is all that is needed to bring them back into line (kind of what Mark has suggested!). Perhaps the partying over Christmas and New Year has taken it's toll!?!

Hope you can make it work for him/her and you.

Regards
