I've found that most employers do the bare minimum, but some have given sick pay at their own discretion. Even SSP can be quite costly for employers, so if you get more, you're very lucky. They can sometimes claim some of it back, but its a very complicated system.

SSP is a legal requirement and that kicks in after 3 days. What they pay before that is up to them as long as it's in the contract - my old place of work didn't pay anything until SSP required.

Hi NJ, if you follow the link you can find out about ssp but you also need to check your contract of employment as most employers will have different policies about what they pay. Some will pay none (except ssp) but give you an attendance bonus at the end of the year others will pay between 3 & 10 days per year before ssp kicks in. Hope this helps.
