(but then again we are already well on the way) Heed the warnings and do something about it before its too late

Warning, I am about to rant!... no names no pack drill...

In my career as a nurse I have been told off for wasting time performing 'caring' routines e.g. giving tlc, grooming, stroking, helping my patient settle/reduce stress and learning about their character so that I can respond better to their needs. I have argued that this is the foundation stone of my profession, to care. I could point to the benefit evidenced by my patients more rapid / smooth recovery because of reduced stress and increased comfort whilst hospitalised. Sad but true I have found myself not claiming all or most of my time for caring activities, to avoid confrontation with the boss who felt it was right to restrict my work to solely meeting patient medical needs. I am guilty of having left unclaimed the true extent of my work-time because, damn it, I just cannot leave my patients with simply their medical needs catered for, that's an incomplete picture in my reasoning. Guess I am a bit of a mug for 'doing it for free' but there you go...it ain't gonna stop me.

Rant over. Zipping my lip now.

Whoever has told you off has obviously never heard of holistic nursing

Re: look and learn

Sadly this all goes back to money - its costs time to "care" and it is not rated highly enough on the patients needs. The correct drugs etc are essential, but so is time to groom, turn, make comfortable, and provide affection. If the only time we touch patients is for meds, iv, bloods etc it is so noticeable in their demeanour.

Re: look and learn

For clarification: my rant was about the fact that ability to care can be stymied from another side, i.e. where the nurse wants to care but is prevented from doing her best in this regard. Be that lack of funding, lack of support or whatever. I am totally in agreement with Sal that a nurse needs to have the skills and compassion to care for her patients. This must surely go hand in hand with the support from his or her employer, which is the aspect I was 'ranting about'.

I was not ranting about Sal. She's a peach!
