I am currently in my 2nd year of a BSc. in Equine Studies and would love to become an equine veterinary nurse. I'd love to do other animals as well, but equine is my main focus. Considering the fact that, once I finish my 3rd year

Re: Newbie looking for some advice :)

Thanks so much for the reply! I am willing to move wherever the job takes me. I've moved country twice for my education (once from Germany to Holland for a good IB school, then from Holland to England for a good Equine degree) so I'm all for that. I'm a huge geek and love learning through both theory and practical experience.

Thanks a lot for being honest! It's vital that I see the more negative sides of the job, and I definitely do.

Re: Newbie looking for some advice :)

I did equine science at uni then worked with horses for a couple of years til I got fed up and went into small animal nursing. I say went into it, I had to work my way up from animal care assistant for a year or so then onto a trainee VN. So what I am saying is that you may have to take a step back in order to reach your goal and be prepared for this. Veterinary nursing is becoming increasingly popular and so its more difficult to get a training position because the amount of TPs hasn't increased with the number of people wanting to train. Try and get work experience, that is what might stand between you and someone else when it comes down to a position.

Are you wanting to work in one particular place or are you able to move to where the work is as this can make a difference aswell.

I did the NVQ which has been replaced by the diploma and I went to college 1 day a week whilst working full time. Student wages are poor so be prepared for this also

I'm making it sound terrible aren't I? Apologies, I just wanted to share some of my experiences with you. However, I wouldnt change my job for the world. I am a bit of a geek so I loved all of the learning I did as a student, it helped that my training practice was ace aswell.

Good Luck!
