I used to sell partylite candles and I found it really therapeutic because it didn't really feel like work, more like an evening out at a friends, you can also pick and choose when you do parties so you don't burn out (no pun intended!)

Have a look www.partylite.co.uk There are many other party plan options available if this doesn't suit.

You will probably find that you wont really end up with any more pay as you will be charged higher tax. I briefly had a second job doing night nursing in a busy hospital covering 2 nights and 1 day and they took 3/4 of my pay off me in tax and national insurance. By the time I had paid fuel to get there I was basically doing it for nothing.

Could you ask for more overtime instead?

[/quote]

If they did do this then you should investigate!

Assuming that:

a) You use up your full tax allowance in the first job

b) you are a basic rate tax earner (20%) and the second job doesn't take you over the threshold

c) you don't have student loans to pay back

Then,

You should be taxed only (20%) in the second job UNLESS in a particular payrun (weekly if paid weekly, monthly if paid monthly) you go over the threshold to pay national insurance. You get the same national insurance allowance in the second job as you have in your first (whereas you only get the tax allowance once). You also won't get student loan repayments deducted.

But (and this is the big but)

If for any reason you have to fill in a self-assessment form for the tax office (e.g. if you have self-employed income to declare), then they will take back student loan payments owing on the second job (probably 9% of all that you have earnt) at that point. I am not sure how this also affects national insurance payments (I am about to find out!)

Re: evening/weekend receptionist

You will probably find that you wont really end up with any more pay as you will be charged higher tax.
