Age can be a problem in getting a placement though, UK govt are offering a 1.5k subsidy to practices taking on students aged 18-24 so that rules me out. And I got turned down by another practice because they said I was already in posession of degrees, so that excluded me from some other funding.

Plus a few college are starting to provide training where they place students in training practices on an unpaid basis, so imagine that will reduce the mnumber of already few paid placements out there. Oh well, what can ya do (apart from continuing to clean kennels for free to get experience, and continue to send out applications).

that thats great that you are coaching 65 year olds though! (that might be me some day in the not too distant future!)

Theres no such thing. I have taught students aged 64 and 65! Not suggesting you wait that long but age is no barrier!

thanks for the support people. yep I'd quite happily start work as a vet assistant if I knew I was going to start training in September! I just feel that time is ticking away, I've already spent a large chunk of my life in college pursing a route that I'm no longer chasing, so I'm starting out again to do vet nursing (hopefully!) and gaining experience along the way.... I'm worried folk will think I'm too long in the tooth to be retraining!!

September isn't that far away - Some practices prefer you to have 3 months with them prior to starting the course. You need time to settle in! Keep going, it will happen,.

Oh and speaking of Edinburgh/Leeds/Potters Bar/Huntington, is anyone currently attending these colleges via the Vocational Full Time Training (Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing) route?? Any recommendations which one to go for?? Anyone live in these areas or know anything about cost of living/rental prices/etc? Tight tight budget for 2 years now and no loans avail., but worth it at the end hopefully :-)

I can confirm that CAW does a January start for full time as well. (In terms of course delivery, it's the same one or two days in college and the rest in practice; the only difference is whether or not you're employed or a student.)

It will happen! Another poster on here was recently lamenting not being able to get a placement, and is starting one tomorrow...

It doesnt feel like it at the time but you are getting valuable experience. Keep going!

Current place is located in Dublin so doesn't do the RVN training. Only option for nurse training in Ireland is 3 or 4 years full time BSc degree. and if you already have a degree, the fees are extortionate!

Yep, Writtle do a Feb start too, but thats part-time.

However you still need a place in a training practice for a full-time course. Full-time means 2 days per week, with 3 spent in practice. As far as I'm aware most colleges still need yo to organise the employment/placement. Does your current practice trains nurses?

Quite a few places have January starts - where are you located? CAW do them in Potters Bar, Leeds, Huntingdon, and Edinburgh, ProCo does Manchester; Abbeydale (I think) do them as well; probably a few others as well!
