Its difficult enough to obtain a placement without having your age go against you!! I'd happily pay course fees just to get a training position. I think govt are also offering a 1.5k subsidy to practices taking on an under 24 year trainee..... So this will pretty much make it impossible for anyone outside that age bracket :-(

Re: advice re: practices paying for training

I'm 29 and as far as I'm aware my employees are not paying for my course. From next year over 24's will not be funded for Level 3 courses, they will need to apply for a govenrment loan. It is similar to a degree loan and is only paid back after you start earninga certain level of salary.

Please dont let this put you off!! Having more mature people in practice is essential!!! Also your practice may pay the course fees, the loans are only for course fees.

Re: advice re: practices paying for training

my practice paid for mine and I was over 24 at the time. The day per week at college was a paid 8 hour day as well. My contract stipulated that I has to remain with the practice for a year after qualification otherwise i would have to pay back all my training and exam fees plus every day they had paid me for being at college.

Re: advice re: practices paying for training

It depends on the practice really! However if you're under 24 years old you'll get either the whole course or a percentage covered by government funding, which is great! As for time off some practices are happy with day release, some make you work the hours as overtime so they get your money's worth. And if your college is pretty local don't be surprised if they expect you to work for an hour or 2 then go to college after. Apply to training practices and if you're lucky enough to get an interview just ask how it works. If you are required to pay for some or all of the course it can usually be arranged to come straight out your wages each month. Off the top of my head training fees are about £2000 a year though!
