&lt;p&gt;I worked for the Blue Cross for 10+ years and I can tell you a lot of the donated sutures, dressings etc were not used if they were out of date. I found this a terrible waste and rather than dump them I used to pass them on to other charities. (I got permission for this) I once received upwards of 50 clin waste bags full of stuff ie a van full (all very useable) and the only things that made it into use were swabs and drapes which were cut to size packed and resterilised. I would say less than a 10th of what was donated was actually used on site&lt;/p&gt;
