I do believe that some of Cesar Millans methods are the most logical when it comes to the rehabilitation of perceived "difficult" dogs. When asked how often the dog is walked, the owner says once or twice a week. Most of these dogs are going stir crazy shut up in peoples houses all day. So Cesars theory of exercise first, is often all that is needed. With regards to the dog that was "hung" (not my words) with its collar & lead - I saw that episode - that dog would have seriously injured someone given half a chance, so to keep it at arms length whilst it completely exhausted itself.......is that so mad? I'm not sure that clicking & rewarding would have any effect!

Having said that, I believe that all the problems are pets have are because of the owner/previous owner. I'm just glad that most dogs are so forgiving of the things we do to them & they really do live in the present.

Re: Dominance training and Cesar Millan (Dog whisperer)

This program sets my teeth on edge...just feeding into the culture of "quick fix" pet ownership built on a bed of ignorance...grrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!
For those that dont already know I once worked at a practice where we used ether as our anaesthetic. Ether can be sort of dodgy around flames or sparks (actually very dodgy) to cut a long story short my lechy boss said he would carry out underwear inspections to make sure I wasnt wearing nylon underwear (for my safety you will understand). He didnt want me to run the risk of any static from my underwear which could cause the ether to ignite

Re: Dominance training and Cesar Millan (Dog whisperer)

LOL.
remember being exposed to a load of people waiting for the bus as I got out of the shower.

I lived in one of those big Victorian converted houses (been converted to about 50 flats to house the nursing staff at minimum cost and where everybody shares one bathroom.... ok bit of an exaggeration - lets say 49 flats one bathroom)

The rule was basically if you managed to get into the bathroom you had squatters rights till the next person wanted you out (usually 5 mins max!)

The bathroom had actually been a linen cupboard when it was a big house and had ordinary glass windows and this pull down blind to preserve your dignity.

one morning I decided to be a rebel - i wanted TEN minutes in the bathroom. So I got up extra early and crept along the landing , locked the door behind me turned the shower on, waited for it to warm up and - it was fantastic, I had first dibs on the hot water. I wasnt getting out till I was dragged out and then I heard it - bloody Norman the cat (named after Norman Tebbit) wailing because he had come in the bathroom with me and wanted to go out. He was making enough racket to wake the dead . I tried to ignore him but he kept up this wailing and then he went all quiet . All was well he was doing normal kitty things, digging at the carpet near the door so I wouldnt be able to get the door open, knocking a whole toilet roll down the loo so when i got out of the shower i would have to retrieve it, playing with the pull to the blind you know the sort of stuff they do to try and look cute..... and just as I got out of the shower the blind shot up and everybody at the bus stop got an eyeful!

Re: Dominance training and Cesar Millan (Dog whisperer)

I was reminded of it tonight as a member online at the moment works at the practice.

Basically I have to set the scene to make you realise why it was quite as embarrassing. On the day it happened I had a copy of the following books on my coffee table: 1) Hot Sex (lent to me by my neighbour who though my sexlife needed a hand) and 2) STIFF (a book not about *cough* erections) but still inappropriately named).

Anyway, on the day in question I was in the shower when a friend popped round. I got out the shower dressed in just a towel and let her in. The dogs were leaping all over her and my geriatric collie jumped up, slipped on the laminater flooring, somersaulted and as he tried to get up caught his front leg through the wrought iron spirals on my coffee table. He got his leg wedged over the carpus. He starts screaming in panic/pain and starts trying to free himself. I rugby tackle him to the floor and pin him doggy style to the floor to stop him breaking his leg. We are completely unable to free him and now it is starting to swell a bit. I said to my friend hand me the phone. There is a vet down the road, I'll ring them, explain the situation and that I am VN and hopefully they'll give us some domitor so we can sedate him and release him. Anyway, she gives me the phone. As I go to ring the vet my dog starts screaming again, fighting me and starts to pee & poo for england. Anyway, to stop me/him sliding round in it I had to use my towel. Now, imagine the scene:

I am pinning my dog to the floor doggy style while completely naked and with a copy of "Hot Sex" & "Stiff" on the coffee table next to us.

Anyway, I ring the vet and explain most of the situation and ask for drugs. He says he cannot just give drugs to my friend but will have to do a house visit and which point I have to explain to him that I am stark-boll*ck naked on top of my dog. He goes quiet, followed by p*ssing himself laughing - at which point my dog starts screaming again. He came straight down with a nurse. Thankfully my friend got to me first and threw a blanket over me. Unfortunately it was one of those furry sofa blankets that are a bit porn-starry ish so that was covering me and the dog!

Anyway, the vet & nurse were very good/professional - I am dying with embarrassment and trying to pretend that its just a normal day by asking about his caseload for the day - but we had to call the fire brigade. Thankfully, the domitor had worked by then and I had managed to get dressed!

reminds me of a therapy course I attended one weekend. One of the tutors produced a whip during a demo - a metorphorical statement that some people like to beat themselves up over things. This little mousy guy on the front row (should add that this was a therapist only session) grabbed his course notes and ran to the back of the room saying 'bleeding hell its just like being at home!' - makes you wonder what goes on in his house

Re: Dominance training and Cesar Millan (Dog whisperer)

Forgot to add, I was the only driver so everyone knew it had to be me

Re: Dominance training and Cesar Millan (Dog whisperer)

[quote user="STRVN"]

Along time ago I was going to a *cough* fetish club - just curiosity you understand - anyway I was working for a veterinary practice at the time that required me to drive the practice vehicle about alot. I was good friends with one of the members of that practice and, at a branch practice, she brought in a cat-o-nine-tails for me to take to the club. Anyway, it was a busy day and I forgot about it. It turned up when the practice vehicle went to get serviced - under the driver's seat
