Vets aren't taught marketing, and you are probably more front of house than he is.

Why not come up with ideas to increase awareness, Facebook pages, twitter are all quite valuable, instead of moaning be proactive... After all if you have no clients you have no job.

Re: Hate My Boss

Maybe could do up signs for the waiting room or send texts to clients on the database reminding them of free nurse clinics for dental checks, juvenile checks, weight clinics, worming advice - people usually end up buying while they are there, even if its just food or flea/worm tx, and it'll remind them that your practice exists so they're more likely to bring their animals over for routine stuff. Or you could suggest an open day, invite clients behind the scenes, show them a few cool x-rays, get their kids involved bandaging their teddy bears, etc. Would be good way of drumming up new business & letting people know you're there, reminding existing clients that you have an excellent practice and friendly personnable staff!! At the very least, it'll show your boss that you're active and engaged in drumming up business, and he might lighten up on you guys!!

Re: Hate My Boss
So our practice is really slow right now. With economy in the shitter, it's no surprise. However, our boss seems to think it's our fault. As in me and my co-worker. Why? Oh, a variety of reasons, but the latest one that came out today is that we don't "read the files, and we aren't telling clients all the prices up front so that he has to work harder at convincing them in the exam room." So his big solution is that he wants me and my coworker to spend our lunch hours "training ourselves" (while he's off at lunch of course). Meanwhile, whenever he's not in an exam, he's in his office studying the subjects his kids are taking in school so he can teach them "what the teachers don't know". In other words, he seems to think it's up to us to figure out how to improve *his* business and make *his* job easier.

I would love to quit, but am terrified that I may end up somewhere worse, or end up making less money, which just isn't an option. I've mentioned before that I will be moving to Edinburgh in October 2014. Who would quit, and who would stick it out for the next two years?
I suppose it depends on how much feeling you have towards the practice - if the practice fails then the chances are your job goes down the pan with it - is there any chance that figuring out how to improve his business and making his job easier might make your job more interesting and profitable as well? I dont think you are going to find it any different over here to what you have there.

PS I hope he never gets to read any of this!

It can be a little daunting at first and there may be a week here or there where you may not have work booked, but occasionally you will get a call on the Friday evening for someone desperate to find a nurse for Monday - and the pay is good too.

The best thing i enjoyed about locuming was the feeling of having zero responsibility - Obviously I'm not talking about with the patients or clients, but in regards the tedious minutae of the running of the business. Cashing up tends the be the most you'll have to do, you have no preconcieved ideas or relationships with the staff or bosses so it takes a few weeks to get to really dislike anyone ;) All the petty office politics can just wash over your head - trust me it's bliss!!

Good luck. I left my first job after waking up in a mad panic at 5am on a Sunday because my boss had asked me to make up another bottle of thio the day before (in Ye Olde Days) and if he had an emergency and needed to knock out anything bigger than a spaniel (which he would have done singlehanded because he wouldnt pay staff to come in) he would have had to make up more himself..... I was actually delerious with relief for weeks afterwards. Two years with a POSSIBLE end in sight is too long to my mind....

Re: Hate My Boss

Locum? You can still achieve a lot in a job role in 2 years. Most people don't love their job ALL of the time, and morale in many clinics can peak and trough dependant on staffing/income/workload - if this is more than a trough and you can't face the thought of another 2 years there then maybe it's time to go. Life is too short to spend it in a job you don't like! Having said that, I wouldnt grab the first job offer that came along or you could end up in another job you have to put up with until you move.
