Does anyone know what the average 'years in service' is for a veterinary nurse?
I remember (a while ago) a vet telling me that veterinary nurses stay in clinical practice for, on average, 5 years.
Does anyone have any evidence of this

Re: 'Years in service'

My head nurse has been in practice since she was 19 she is now 46!!! she thinks the majority of nurses cannot afford to stay in the proffesion and you only have to look at the forum to see many nurses leave because they dont feel valued.

I have been in practice 5 years and hope i stay in the profession many more years i cannot imagine doing any other job as stressful as it is..

Re: 'Years in service'

Been RVN for 15 years, despite the rubbish days, annoying clients and financial restricts (sometimes) don't know what else i would want to do!

Re: 'Years in service'

Nurses in our practice have been there for ages, between the four of us it ranges from 20 years down to 7 years (me)

Re: 'Years in service'

Qualified in 1999, still in practice now...
The last RCVS Survey of the Profession we did (2010) didn't ask about years in service per se but it did look at the average age of VNs in different roles - which may give you a guide.

The average age was 31 across the board; average for student VN was 24; for VN was 31 and Head Nurse was 33 - we also looked at other roles (see page 8 of this document http://www.rcvs.org.uk/publications/rcvs-survey-of-the-professions-2010/?destination=%2Fpublications%2F%3Ffilter-keyword%3Dsurvey%26filter-type%3D%26filter-month%3D%26filter-year%3D).

We also looked at average year of qualification. The average in 2010 was 2003 - so I guess this also gives a guide to years of service, although it's not clear if the person would have worked continually without a break.

Best wishes
