He has stopped eating and on exam the vet says he has an infection and also ulcers on his tongue so hopefully this is deemed as medical.

Feel like a bad mummy for not noticing sooner but up until 3 days ago he was perfectly fine as far as i was aware.

I will get a pre-authorization sorted tomorrow, i have booked him in provisionally for thursday. Poor little man!

Re: Cat dental

Hi, insurance pays for dentals if there is a MEDICAL reason for the dentistry. So a cat with no symptoms may not get paid out, as that is considered preventative (prophylactic) dentistry and that is often excluded.

If a cat is not eating and shows signs of illness that is traced to a painful infected mouth; then this is a valid medical reason for a dental and that's something an insurance company will more often pay out for. However check your policy and ensure that there aren't any exclusions.

Insurance companies can and have gone either way on this.

Anyway, you can ring up your insurance company and request a pre-authorization form; have your policy number and things like that handy.

Cheers,
Mark

Re: Cat dental

Ok how do i go about doing a pre-authorisation form? I take it the vet has to fill it in and fax to petplan maybe?

We have estimated his age at approx 8 years but no one knows really. He did have a full vet check in March when i had him and no mention of dental issues so maybe a chance i guess.

Re: Cat dental

You can do a pre-authorisation form and you should get a reply within 3 days, probably quicker. I assume if you have insured him you have estimated his age as less than 10 years? Petplan are the most likely to pay of all the insurance companies, but with no history they may be a bit more reluctant. The pre-authorisation form is the way forward, then you'll know for sure, there is no point in ringing them, they won't tell you over the phone.

Re: Cat dental

Petplan (in my opinion) are one of the best for paying out for dentals. We have claimed before for dentals and they usually pay out. Best bet is to phone them first and explain that you haven't had him that long, ask if they'll pay out.
