I only recently became aware that all courses are changing awarding body from RCVS to City and Guilds for the level 3 diploma. I am starting my course in January (cannot wait!!) and the college im going to is using Central Qualifications as

Re: City and Guilds level 3 diploma/central qualifications diploma in veterinary nursing

..... I should point out that I am with Central Quals...... Luckily (and I think Luckily is the operative word), i passed my first year exams. I was not happy that my answers were educated guesses as opposed to a confident application of my knowledge gained through study and revision. I am otherwise very happy with the course, and it is very well put together and you can plan ahead with your studying. I find that the assignments when completed properly actively encourage learning and I personally found my completed assignments useful as revision aids.
The CSL is very comprehensive, but thats why we are studying to qualify.... So that we are competent is all aspects of veterinary nursing. I found the CSL daunting at first, but if you look through it, you can very easily cross reference cases with other tasks. I would certainly advise to look through tasks when uplaoding evidence, as I have personally found that I probably could have completed a lot more than I actually have done! Good luck.

Re: City and Guilds level 3 diploma/central qualifications diploma in veterinary nursing

I completely agree with you Maylane, I am in my first year sitting my anatomy paper in June. This is a tough course!! I am doing the course over 2 years and I am buried in assignments and finding it very hard to find time to get revision in and CSL all at the same time. Wishing you all the best with your course :)

Re: City and Guilds level 3 diploma/central qualifications diploma in veterinary nursing

I'm currently in my second year on the Central Qualifications diploma. So far I have passed all exams first time (paper 2 and paper 1) but I've found the exam questions to be very tricky - designed to catch you out rather than test your knowledge. I would love to know how their pass rate compares to the RCVS - I would worry that far fewer nurses will make the end of the course than with RCVS. I'm all for a comprehensive qualification that produces knowledgeable competent nurses but it feels the bar has been set VERY (too) high by CQ. The assignment burden is massive - 27 in total, on top of homework, tests, exams and CSL this is a tough course.

I am a mature student, I've worked in sales and marketing, have a family and am helping my children through their GCSE's, I study every night, every weekend - every spare minute! I have studied A-levels and been to university. The central Qualifications Diploma is TOUGH!

I will be really interested to see how many SVN's from the first CQ intake last year manage to qualify at the end of this year...........

Re: City and Guilds level 3 diploma/central qualifications diploma in veterinary nursing

Like the other replies - as a VN course leader, our college uses Central Qualifications, and so far they have been really supportive and very helpful. The syllabus is extremely nicely presented, and does contain more detail than its RCVS counterpart, which is a great help for us in planning the course and will be a great help to you for revision. They set their own exams and assignments which is also great for standardisation - under the RCVS Diploma, centres had to write their own in house examinations and assignments, so I used to wonder how consistent these were across the board. My students have also commented on how user friendly the CSL is.

Why not visit the CQ website? http://www.cqual.org.uk/cq-en/

Good luck - it won't make any difference at all to your qualification, in answer to your post.

Re: City and Guilds level 3 diploma/central qualifications diploma in veterinary nursing

The City & Guilds Diploma is currently essentially the RCVS diploma; the awarding body intellectual property was sold to C&G. The NPL is the same, exams computer based; I do not know details about what they plan to do in the future.

The people I talk to say nice things about the CQ skills log; I think computer based exams are a great way to go; but then I run CPD, not VN training. :)

I have just started the CQ course, as far as I am aware the syllabus is a lot more detailed than the RCVS

The CSL (central skills log) has the same requirements as the NPL but the CSL gives you A LOT more guidance, and you are able to upload photos and video evidence in your logs

There are more assignments to complete in the CQ course compared to the RCVS

The CQ exams are paper based unlike the RCVS which are on the computer.

But overall I think both courses cover the same modules and both the CQ exams and the RCVS exams are practically the same.

The only thing that remains unchanged is the practical exams they are still held by the RCVS even for the CQ students.

Hope this made sense and helped a bit x

Re: City and Guilds level 3 diploma/central qualifications diploma in veterinary nursing

As far as I understand the qualifications results in the same thing, RVN status but they have a slighlty different syllabus and NPL requirements.

Someone else may know more but we had the choice to swap over to Central but as I've done 50% of my NPL I was advised not to.
