I went on a course for programming pacemakers and all the nurses/technicians/doctors' minds were blown!! they didnt even think we did scans and ECGs on animals.

We get quite a few job applicants that write, "I just love animals!" on their applications. I always want to ask them if they love cleaning as they'll be doing a lot of it. If the love working crappy hours. If they love being bitten, scratched, dragged, stomped, body slammed, etc. as they'll get a bit of that. If they love being covered in yuck as there is a lot of that. If they love being treated badly by the public as there is some of that. It's quite frustrating when people don't understand that veterinary medicine involves more then "playing" with the animals. We actually practice real medicine. I found this issue on the shelf in the supermarket and read it! not buying it though £4 or something

The only place it seems to mention the cuddling thing is in the index, the article itself is very true to form, it's actually the head nurse at battersea, it seems to be a promo before the new tv series starts? She does mention all the normal jobs, i reckon the cuddling dogs bit is really to grab people attention.

Body fluids, yes, part and parcel, but if you're getting bitten and scratched on a daily basis, you're doing something very wrong with your handling & restraining/reading of animal body language....

I would write to the editor of that magazine and tell them what's what! Cuddles! That's 0.5% of my job, along with admin, training of nurses, cleaning up urine, faeces, taking blood, running lab samples, restraining, reception, answering phones, dealing with clients, solving problems, holding vets' hands, washing, autoclaving, cleaning, anaesthetist... The list goes on....

I would invite that person who wrote the statement to spend a day in practice to see what it is actually like for veterinary nurses...

In my first animal interview I said "I know it's not all cuddly animals, there will be a lot of lifting poo and cleaning up urine"

this is how one of my first bosses described what my duties would be at interview

keeping the practice clean tidy and stocked

keeping animals clean fed and comfortable at all times

keeping on top of the laundry and the rubbish bins

holding the fort when he wasnt there (which included taking the phones on an evening)

taking care of clients

doing as I was told

- I know things have changed a bit since I came into this but no cuddling puppies and kittens wasnt in the job description

When I first got into working with animals, my interview questions were always "what do you think this job entails?" Thankfully I had a very realistic view of what the job entails so was okay, apparently a lot of people actually think that it is exactly what Cosmopolitan has written.So ignorant!

I spend my whole day cuddling puppies and kittens, occasionally stopping to fluff up the fur of a bunny or two. I'm sure if I worked with large animals I would also be able to gambol through fields of flowers with lambs as well :)
