I know of many jobs particularly in agriculture where the second word gets round you're thinking of leaving they terminate your employment straight away as they think if they give you time stuff will get stolen

I saw you use this positively, go out there, find a new job, be happy and prove them wrong in ways. Much as I understand you've got loyalties to your students if you're practice is only giving you 30 days they must have something else in place for them :)

i have very recently spoken to legal help line on this issue. obviously check your contract but in my situation the vet handed his notice in in Aug saying he would leave end of Oct. his contract states 2 months notice so i took that to mean mid sep would finish but NO. according to legal advice, he specified when he would leave giving a minimum on 2 months notice.

if you haven't actually handed in written notice i don't think you can be told you have to leave unles there are other terms in your contract

Why not approach your boss and suggest that you would like to give 90 days notice? You can then be upfront and give them a guarantee that you will be as hard working as ever as you will still be looking for a decent reference, and that if they notice your behaviour changing in there, they can reevaluate the notice period?? The main thing is to reassure them that you won't be bad mouthing them or causing trouble or slacking off. Sometimes even knowing that you are definately leaving but not for a while will give you a new lease on life - a new burst of energy as the end is in sight so the old problems may not bother you as much!! You could say you'd been considering moving on to another practice - new job fresh challenge more money, etc, but that you had made a mental committment to stay til after x-mas and had planned to see it through. Could includeethe excuse that you wanted to stay on for the students, although its unlikely to be a huge difference to them leaving in one month versus three months, and you can still keep in touch with them if you are working in another practice. You could offer to help recruit for your replacement and help train them in - try to make it a positive, not a negative that you want to stay!!

is it possible the other person handed in their notice prior to boss finding out from somebody else that they were wanting to leave?

The thing is somebody has betrayed a confidence and if you dont know who it was who can you trust? and from your employers point of view they may be a little put out that they have heard it from somebody else before they heard it from you?

You could still stay in touch with your students - I have done this when I have changed practices. Have done practical practice in my kitchen before - theres always ways around things

I'm not taking any sides here but your employer is right - your attitude will change along with everybody elses in the practice now the decision is common knowledge, and I can see how they would want to limit the amount of time this goes on for, hence the 30 days.

30 days is actually a good bit of time for you to turn up some work - even if you locum until something permanent comes along. Your students would have been in the same position had you handed in your notice a month or 2 months down the line.

Even if (and it is an IF) legally you could stay for longer than the 30 days the question is would you want to - how would it benefit you? If you are unhappy enough to be wanting to leave how is working there any longer going to make you any happier? Chalk it down to experience and find somewhere else

Contract says the usual, can be terminated due to gross misconduct, turnin up drunk (tempting!) etc etc but has those golden words 'this list is not exhaustive'. I want to stick it out til the end of the year because I've got students taking practical and theory exams, the last thing they need is the only person supporting them ditching them at their time of need!

Ow. Check your contract to see if it has reasons to terminate you with 30 days notice, it's a question if you even want to stay, though - clearly there is no great trust at your clinic. To quote Benjamin Franklin; "three may keep a secret if two of them are dead".
