I stayed in hostels when I went to New York which worked out a LOT cheaper than hotels, and theres the bonus that you can get to meet lots of new people! I spent three days randomly staying in a self catering apartment in Harlem which actually turned out really well, it was cheaper than other areas, I found the people friendly and it was a quick subway ride to whichever other part we wanted to go to. I did get some shocked looks from my American friends when I told them we had stayed in Harlem though...!

Just come back from New York this week & loved it, go up the Empire State building as early as possible to avoid long queues, great views & also the rockafellar centre (there is a charge) good views of central park also up there. Take good walking shoes as now have lots of lovely blisters!!

I lOve NY! I lived there for a while. Top tip- don't bother with going up the Empire State, go up the Rockefella building instead- better views and I think it's free.

Ps, am sure apartment rentals for less than 30days in NYC is illegal, but I might have the specifics wrong, the trip advisor forum definitely has info about it, that's where I read about it. Pps, depend when in December you want to go, start is most expensive time (thats when were going as typically was only time we could both get off), as it gets closer to Christmas gets a bit cheaper apparently and then rises dramatically after Christmas and for NYE.

I'm going in December too (was there in Jan 2010 too) got a good deal through Thomas Cook - flights with KLM via Amsterdam (couldn't get direct flights from anywhere other than London, which is a loooong way from us), staying at the Travel Inn in Hells Kitchen for £1366 for 2 people for 4 nights (I trawled through all sorts of websites and that was the cheapest I could find). It IS cheaper to stay in Long Island City, depends if you don't mind going back and forth on the subway, we would always go back to the hotel to change for dinner/show and back out, so couldn't face 4 subway rides minimum each day, but that might not bother you. You can get a 7day subway pass for round $20 (i think). You can get cheaper rooms, most of them have shared bathrooms, but again that might not bother you. I'd recommend Trip Advisor too, if you go on the NYC forum they have specialist advisors who can help you find a deal, but make sure you tell them your exact travelling dates and your budget in USD. NYC is amazing, I adored it the first time and couldn't wait to go back :)

Have looked up hotel 41 and Holiday Inn and both have no availability for dates in Dec! Will keep looking.

were going in 3 weeks, were staying at hotel 41 which is right on times square. Its very cheap for Manhattan £125 a night. I think its quite basic but were not fussy and want a good location on a budget as only have 2 days there

Like Sazzle, I stayed at The Holiday Inn which was mid priced and clean and comfortable. It was 12yrs ago though so am guessing prices may have gone up

Public transport is often pretty good; might consider a cheaper apartment or hotel if the travel costs are low enough to compensate. Ie if it's 15 minutes away on the subway, and the cost is £100 less, why not go for it?

Never been before and going to be heading for a few days in Dec. have high expectations as everyone I know keeps telling me how fab it is and i'll love it.

I know Dec is prob one of the most expensive times to go but got very good value with flights so might have to sacrifice a bit with the accommodation.!

We have been looking at renting apartment for a couple of days through website we found. Seems genuine and could get apartment for 4 nights for the 2 of us for around €400......Seems reasonable to me, thats in Manhattan aswell

Will have a look at some of the places recommended, never know I might get a great offer

Cheap and New York dont go together im afraid!

I went 2 years ago and stayed in the Hotel Edison just off times square, amazing location but 3 night cost about £800 (that includes flights though)

Im going again in May next year and have budgeted £1000 for the trip, but im taking my mum so we need a nice hotel..mother wont slum it :-) there are plenty of hostels which might be the best option.

you will love new york, i fell in love with the place and very excited to be going back!!!!

I don't think cheap and Manhattan go together! lol

We are staying for 2 nights at Hotel Beacon on the Upper West Side(splurge) then transferring to Hotel Verve in Long Island City.

It's a 10 min subway ride to Times quare and much, much cheaper than anywhere in Manhattan.

Beware of very cheap places as they may not be all they seem.

Trip Advisor is excellent for research, hotels, advice..would recommend a browse there.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Midtown when I went. Near to pretty much all locations ie, Broadway, Times Square, 5th Avenue, Central Park etc It was 2007 when I went and I can't wait to go back, am thinking of going back for my 30th
