So do I but hindsight is a wonderful thing and at least you've investigated fully and completely and got a result.... my cat also had giardia which is also one of the things that can trigger pancreatitis and I reckin she has probably had it for years as well... Don't beat yourself up about it... it's been and gone.... at least ypu can make him confortable and treat him right from now on

Re: Vomiting cat!

I just feel really guilty that he's had to suffer for so long.

Re: Vomiting cat!

[quote user="Steph Worsley RVN MBVNA"]

Thanks to the info given here re feline pancreatitis, my skinny, stressy, vomiting Maine Coon has just been diagnosed with pancreatitis after doing the fPli test. He's had every other blood test known to man and after reading this I spoke to a couple of vets at work, we sent bloods off last night and results today are +ve. He is a small Maine Coon but he currently weighs only 3.79kgs and without his long coat would resemble a toast rack. I really didn't want to refer him as the stress would probably have made him ill. At least now I can try to help him.

Really pleased we were able to help you get a diagnosis for your kitty, sensitive diet and pancreatic enzymes on each meal will help hopefully!!

So many options now scared of trying the Zylkene!! One of the vets is using it for here dog she said it takes while for it to take effect.

I have to agree with sarah on this one. Dont really want to put her through too many scary tests. She is insured but I took her to vets before got her insured! Doh so wont be covered but cost not a bother its her mental state I worry about.

Although I do have a dislike to the steriod abuse although shes loving chicken and tuna at the mo with no v+ so that can only be a good thing. Awaiting my bag of hypoallergenic to arrive.

Hopefully that will settle her down again

She gets so stressed and is mad as a hatter. She frequently gets cystitis along with her V+. I've tried every food imaginable and she stops being sick for a few weeks then starts again. She's had bloods which came back normal and I x-rayed her but NAD also. I spoke to one of the locums who works in the ultrasound dept at the vet school and he said that an ultrasound probably wouldn't show much, so the best thing would be an ex lap and biopsy. Since she is the spawn of satan and doesn't let you do anything to her without taking a hissy fit, I don't want to put her through the stress of an operation. Instead I just change her food every few weeks and try and keep her as stress free as possible. If she gets really bad I give her a shot of convenia and some voren 14 which usually settles her for a few days.

Re: Vomiting cat!

[quote user="SaskiaVN"]

Yes I used it on my Ocicat after her RTA. I used it every day for two months and then trickled it off and now she only has one when it's going to be a stressful situation. I noticed a big difference in her within a week of using it. :)

I do have another cat that has allergies to all outdoor plants and some food and she's also very stressy. i'm currently adding amatriptyline (not sure on spelling) to help with the overgrooming and stress as all the homeopathic remidies don't work with her.

If it is a stress responce maybe you need something stronger. Otherwise it's investigative bloods, endoscopy and possibly biopsies. Have you got insurance? Just thinking fluoroscopy and barium contrast to see if her swallowing motion is correct?

I tried lots of things with food- moving to other room which she wont eat she will only eat in the dining room we now put it on the table on a night so the other cats dont touch it. She only gets small amounts at a time as went on cpd talk on overweight cats (Which she is a little) stressy cats get stressed when no food and will eat more causing obesity and if she eats it all she v+s.

Im going to have a look into the pancreatits thing and will try speaking to RCW to see what they say. At the moment dont want to put her through too many procedures etc as taking her to work makes her spray!!

Oh what joy why are nurses pets sooo annoying???

I had a cat that vomited with everything under the sun except the RCW Hypoallergenic diet. The other option might be a raw diet. She's now also on immunotherapy injections, which were taylor made for her after she had some patch testing done. The other idea may be that she is woofing the food when she does have it and it's just getting down her too fast. Have you tried feeding her in a seperate room? setting up meals in the day so she's on a regular schedule? Sometimes routine can help cats that are stressed about their environments. Also what about Zyklene and Feliway for the stress?

Re: Vomiting cat!

One of my cats is a stressy cat.... She was calici positive and had interferon injs in her mouth and at the moment she has been clear for a year - but she has always had intermittent vomitting for periods of time, and I'm pretty sure she has IBS but really, really don't want to put her thru intestinal biopsies due to the risk of bringing back on her calici virus. She regularly passes normal faeces with some fresh bld but in herself is very happy and content at the moment.

She is 10 this year, a good wt, body condition and coat good and a very clingy but no touching kind of cat... ie we have regular forced hugs!!

Due to her calici virus, I went down the additive free/ preservative free food route with her as much as poss and I am sure this has helped alot... She only has lower k9's and incisors but loves her i/d food and I feed Natures Menu sachets and Applaws, I'm sure this has helped with her IBS as well. Came to the conclusion last year that worming her, upset her eg brought on a bought of vomitting, so also stopped using flea products on her as well. Luckily so far no fleas!!

Her vomitting was always abit strange when I was able to witness it..... Always a brown liquid and she always backed away while doing it in a long line. (Usually in my bedroom!)

Anyway so far this year she hasn't vomitted, after the last couple of years seeming to do it every few wks.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is that one of our vets went on some CPD recently and said that feline pancreatitis is nore common than we realise and I was wondering if that was my cats problem, cos it seems to fit.... and I was going to test her for it when she showed some symptoms but.... she hasn't shown any symptoms recently so I haven' t been able to... but I thought you could look into it for your cat perhaps.... Appologies for the waffle!!!!

Did have a cat with lymphoma come in the other day which we ex-lapped which did make me wonder as all that was doing was v+. . Vet has felt her and cant feel anything in abdomen but suppose you cant tell unless you look.

Just seems wierd that preds settle it and is only on a morning.

Re: Vomiting cat!

what tests have been done?
