Many larger companies have very active firewalls and antivirus software that blocks external images from loading. A small facebook image might be fine but you'd just end up with a signature that has failed to load. You can make small text as a signature; a few hyperlinks with relevant information.

The Achilles' heel with our emails to external contacts is that we're required to put a lengthly disclaimer (automatically generated, thank goodness!) about how the email was scanned to avoid viruses and malware, and a dozen lines about how we comply with the Data Protection Act, Human Rights Act, and a bunch of other legalities. Which is a bit fun when you've sent a two line email to a business contact and you've got a dozen lines after it full of legal disclaimers! :)
