This is my first post so apologies if in the wrong place!
I am currently working as a nurse in a small practice. I enjoy the job however would really like to get into teaching/lecturing at a college or similar.
I have not been qualified

Re: Becoming a teacher of vet nursing?

Hi Laura! Generally we require a minimum of a year qualified to be a CC; depends more on the individual nurse. However as you've worked as a nurse for a few years this is not a problem in this case, should be fine. You get training and support from your training provider as well. (Some training providers have different experience requirements to be a CC, it's best to ask them specifically if you're going with another provider.)

Cheers,

Mark

(edit: I checked with our staff member who goes out to support Clinical Coaches.)

Re: Becoming a teacher of vet nursing?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I have spoken to my practice manager and hopefully can get the ball rolling with the clinical coach training next year. How long must you be qualified to become a CC? She thinks it is a year however I have heard of recently qualified clinical coaches? I would have the full support/guidance of my head nurse in any training given to myself or students (should we get any!)

I have worked as a VN for over 3 years however just recently qualified last year. I am looking to do some work experience in different fields before considering anything but I really enjoy teaching the trainees (not VN, we have had a few animal care placement students in the past) that my practice currently has. Unfortunately for me my practice has a lot of VNs which have been there a long time and so its difficult to get any more responsibility (ie, coaching) as they are all 'more' qualified so to speak although none of them actually want to do it.

Is there any other experience I could get which would help me in securing a college place to become QTS?

I have looked into some college courses for teaching adults and feel much better now I know there is something to work towards- perhaps one day!

Thanks again.

Re: Becoming a teacher of vet nursing?

You rang?

The vacancies above are certainly open to people new to lecturing; however we would look for evidence that you've worked in a training or mentoring role before, or had experience in practice.

If you're looking to get into lecturing, my personal opinion is that your best bet would be to start by becoming a clinical coach. Why? Because this is a great way to get familiar with the requirements of the VN Diploma or Degree. Not having a student vet nurse isn't necessarily a problem - the College offers student placements and I imagine other providers may do the same. You also get trained as a clinical coach; giving you good insights in working with students.

You mention "recently qualified" - how recent is that? Generally clinical coaches should have a few years of experience; after all they hold a big responsibility in practical training here.

As for teaching certificates, another early level teaching certificate is PTLLS, Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
kind regards,
Mark

Re: Becoming a teacher of vet nursing?

Mark Hedberg is a regular contributor on this forum - I'm sure he'll be along shortly but if not just send him a PM!

Re: Becoming a teacher of vet nursing?

You can still do the PGCE and you will get a Cert Ed without the PG bit! I completed the 2 year Cert Ed course this time last year.....i got accepted to carry on and do the full degree but i decided to concentrate on other things :-)

For some teacher training you can get grants to help with the cost...you'd have to look at direct.gov website

Re: Becoming a teacher of vet nursing?

I don't know if you've seen this, but it doesn't look like you necessarily need to have too much experience?
