It is produced by the RCVS aimed at VN students and lays out exactly which documents they will need to use to make up their "diary" (e.g. tutorial records, skill smatch form (has a new name now), signature authentification sheet etc). The handbook might be called something else now but you should be able to get one from your Training Provider's placement co-ordinator electronically via email. However all the fine details in regards to your coaching are dictated by your training provider (every course has their own quirks/way of doing things) so it's always best to ask what they specifically want from you. Things change so often there might not even be a candidate handbook any more..?!

A standardisation day, as Mark has suggested, is a great idea. Although they do not occur too frequently and you might not want to wait around for the next one as it could hold back your student's progress.

Re: Clinical coach help needed

I also log all the one to one things extra to day to day stuff. for example sitting down and talking about cases or explaining things. i just keep a note on a spreadsheet on the computer with date and brief details. i haven't done it before this year either so i just wanted to have it written what i have done so no one can dispute anything.

the other thing i think is very important is whenever you set deadlines for anything on NPL, write that down. that way if it isn't done, student can;t say they were not aware it had been decided on (forgive if this sounds negative)

Re: Clinical coach help needed

Thanks people x

Re: Clinical coach help needed

Hi Spud,

The diary is for them to record what they learn each day and for them to reflect on their day to day work. As for the 3 hours, you will manage this just by working with them, demonstrating for the NPL, discussing how they could improve what they are doing or suggesting maybe easier or quicker ways to do something.

You need to do a skills match form this will give you an idea of what your student feels ok at doing and give you somewhere to start. You can the plan what to concentrate on. I generally find the kennel and lab stuff the easiest to do.

Its all a bit daunting to start with but you soon get there.

Good luck

Re: Clinical coach help needed

If they make you feel stupid they don't deserve you as a clinical coach. ;) ask them if they have a standardization day coming up, you can rub shoulders with fellow coaches and catch up.

Re: Clinical coach help needed

I didnt want to aound stupid kn fromt of the college just forgot alot as cc day was 5months ago and only just got a student now x

Re: Clinical coach help needed

Hi spud! Have you tried ringing your training provider? They should have an idea on what they need your student practicing. Is it a first year student? Second year? 3 hours is the general time recommendation; basically you should spend at least this much time helping your student with things they need to learn or things you've noticed they're not good at. (Some clinical coaches spend significantly more time than this with their students; depends on the student and depends on the coach.)
