Its pretty strict i'm afraid, unless we're incredibly short-staffed! Its because we are almost entirely staffed by volunteers, so you have to be there long enough to be trained up to work completely independently (and in turn help train newer vols). By all means drop Pav an email though, as you are a VN he might be able to make an exception :)

Though I have just been looking on the website and have read that it is a minimum of 4 weeks. I am not sure this would be possible for mine and my partners work, is this a strict rule or are you fairly flexible?

hi Vicki, you are so right, chelonas are the bee's knees :) Please email Pavlos Tsaros, rescue@archelon.gr , for further details, usually we ask for 4weeks minimum but as we are so stuck i am sure we can relax the rules slightly ;) Also, if any of your family wanted to be occasional volunteers we have a few local greeks or ex-pats who come in some weekends or whatever and help out, so that would be great! x

I'm very interested in this as a) Sea Turtles are the best animals EVER and b) my family live in Athens. :)

I was just wondering if there is a minimum amount of time you have to volunteer for?

There is an airport in Patras (Araxas) that Ryanair fly to from Stanstead. It is a new route and I haven't done it myself, would require you getting a bus/taxi from airport to the bus station, then a coach to Athens (about 4 hrs, about 20 euro). The flights were pretty cheap when I last looked but unfortunately can't advise further.

You could also get a cheap flight to Zakynthos (Zante) and then get a coach from there to Athens - it will go via Patras too, but its easy, you just get on the coach on the island and it takes you all the way, on the ferry and then on to Athens. Dunno about costs but wouldn't be horrendous.

I have a friend who is experienced and very interested and he has 2 weeks booked off at the end of September but the flights are looking expensive - do you have any recommendations or is there another airport they can fly to?

No we have no qualms about a bit of free publicity, that would be awesome

A fellow turtler is good mates with the lads from the Kaiser Chiefs, so when they came to Athens last we made sure they did their MTV Greece interviews from the walkways over the turtle tanks..... hehehe

Sounds AMAZING! Unfortunately I can't make it as I'm saving to go to volunteer in India next year but maybe the year after that could be turtles?! Wishing you luck with finding the people you need :)
