Well, after a few months of rebuilding my confidence after years of 'no's in respect of trying to secure a VN training position I have found a way of hopefully getting onto the degree

Re: ANA/VCA distance learning

Yes. I can't wait. Me and the missus gonna make a day of it. I found it when I went on one of my regular jaunts to the nhm but didn't have enough cash to get in.
I am not missing it. I don't drink or smoke so museums are my drug of choice. The VCA is not essential for getting on my degree, I just think it may possibly help, and will give me solid basis for it and the NPL which is incorporated within it.

Will make the call tuesday along with all the other unis and colleges I need to call to get them to pull their fingers out. This time next year I WILL be making final preperations for starting my degree.

Thanks Kate and Mark.

I will give CAW a call on Tuesday when places open again. darned bank holidays... after 10 years in animal care i still havent understood why every other industry shuts down... animals gotta be fed etc etc... this past 12 months in and out of employment has been the first bank holidays i have not worked since i was 15... can anyone suggest what i do until tuesday... even the library is shut so i cant come and have a geek out in the science section...

as for the level 3 then top up to a degree, that would be fair enough if i could find a practice to train me to a level 3 standard, but i cant afford to work full time for free, and paid placements are getting increasingly rare with many people having others to financially support them whilst they train. plus, i have gotten rather enthused about the bristol uni BSc course.

I know the VCA and ANA is only a level two and therefore wouldn't help by means of ucas points, but with the high competition to vn training(even at degree level: at bristol, my preferred uni, there were just 2d places for 186 applicants this year) I hoped ANA/VCA would help show my commitment to training. I would study distance learning for my ANA/VCA, alongside in college study for my Access course, and volunteering in practice in my free time. Then with a bit of luck I would be able to start my degree in september 2013.

The degree I am most interested in is the BSc in veterinary nursing and bioveterinary science (I am a bit of a science geek) and profided I can get the credits in my access course I stand a slim chance. my error was in spending time with my ailing mother when studying my ND instead of trying for a DDD profile

Re: ANA/VCA distance learning

Hi Jax!!

I'll try and answer some of your questions
(I hope to be starting an Access to HE- Science course in a week or too).
What I am out to asking is, would either the ANA or VCA course give me a competitive edge in applying for a degree?
The entry requirements onto the degree course I'm doing say Access to HE Science must include at least 15 points in biology. As for the ANA/VCA course I'm not sure if they are equivalent to Level 3. If they're not then, no, you wouldn't be able to use that qualification for entry, BUT different unis have different entry requirements so before embarking on a VCA course with a view to using it for entry to uni check with the uni you wish to attend. This is a link to the RVC entry requirements for the FdSc

http://www.rvc.ac.uk/Undergraduate/FoundationNursing/EntranceReq.cfm#Access
Does my JSA entitle me do any fee concessions on a Distnce learning course?
Again, individual colleges providing these courses will have different concessions rates so check. From experience most allow for Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit - I assume if you get JSA you'll also get CTB.

Good luck!!!
