I'm feeling quite down lately because i've been told i'm too slow in the clinic... i can get everything done but the vets want me to do it faster... i have been trying but the nursing manager says it's still not good enough. i don't know

Re: Being efficent in the clinic - help please?

as your manager they should provide support and feedback, that is a big part of their job. There is nothing wrong with double checking calculations to make sure that they are correct, that is being conciencious.

I hope you start to feel better soon, these things improve with experience so stick at it and you will be just fine!

Re: Being efficent in the clinic - help please?

Thanks for all the responses everyone, they've made me feel a bit better.
I try to follow protocols and lists in my head. I also carry a notebook in my nurses pouch which has dot points and lists of how to do things. For some reason it hasn't seemed to have helped.
I think my job might be on the line here, and I'm very nervous cause I love my job. I will try and talk to the nursing manager about it but I have a feeling she won't be very helpful :(

Re: Being efficent in the clinic - help please?

My thoughts are that if your manager has critised you for being 'too slow', then they must offer some guidance on 'where' you are too slow, and how they feel you could 'speed up'. Everyone works differently, and I have worked with those who rush around frantically, but miss many important details, send everyone else into a frenzy, and who are probably not actually any 'faster' than those who take a little more time and care. It is always prudent to double check doses etc - you can't take it back once you've injected it! One tip for maybe speeding up checking drug doses is to compile a chart with all your common drugs with weights and amounts in mls - just as a quick double check after you have done an accurate calculation as to whether you are correct. It is also useful to have a set sequence of tasks for each procedure you do - so you always follow that, and don't miss things and have to go back and add things - for example, setting up theatre - get used to doing things in a certain order and stick to that. Hospitalised patients - have a set routine - check, vet to check, write on hosp sheet, write up and price on record, phone owner with an update etc. Having set protocols means that you are less likely to miss things, gives you some structure, and makes you more efficient. I would definitely go back to your manager though, and ask for more guidance on this. I have to say, in 15 years of vet nursing, I have never heard of anyone being chastised for being too slow; maybe I have just always been lucky enough to work with a team who understands that we all work at different rates, and there are pros an cos to both. Hope this helps...

Re: Being efficent in the clinic - help please?

I get this too even after 10yrs.
