Yep, training is not easy thats for sure. They (whoever they are!) say that nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

I'm getting the feeling that you're feeling a tad pi**ed off!

As a nurse in a very small practice, I sometimes find it difficult to assess my students, as I don't see why at the end of an 11 hour day, I should take home caselogs to be assessed, but i usually end up staying late to assess, or stay back on my half day. Maybe this was the case in your assessor - maybe she too was feeling overwhelmed by the caselogs - without support its difficult to become a good assessor. Maybe the vet genuinely didn't have time - if they stopped running the practice to deal with your caselogs, there wouldn't be a practice left!!

Also its your responsibility to gather cases, so maybe you need to put yourself forward more when a potential case comes in....maybe the cases just didn't come in when you where there.

As for your assessment - if you didn't agree with it, ask the nurse who filled it out for a meeting to explain why she filled it in like this - don't just get stroppy afterwards - there could be plenty of reasons why it was marked the way it was. Maybe you didn't see a behaviour change but your assessor did.

Everyone who has trained as a nurse, has done the hours, the hard work before & after gaining a placement - so everyone knows how difficult it - even if they don't show it.

The worse thing you can do is to dwell on these difficult placements and move onwards - don't become bitter & accept that variety is the spice of life & no 2 practices are run the same way!

Always keep your line of communication open - if I read this thread & you'd been my student I would be deeply disappointed - keep talking to your superiors, both assessors & other staff, about what progress you need to make. T

his thread does read like you've got a bit of a chip on your shoulder too, so maybe you need to chill out a bit - end of your training can be a tough time, when you need to gather cases.

Nothing like a load of self righteous, smug advice to make someone feel better is there? I'm just at the end of my veterinary nurse training and beleive me, I sometimes wonder if the fact I want to care for animals and find clinical practice so interesting has any relevance as I virtually drowned amoungst behaviour tool, portfolio deadlines etc. Don't know if anyone's heard of the behavioural tool? it's a report at the end of each placement on your 'professional behaviour'. For each item you score; 1 and 2 is a fail, 3, 4 and 5 is a pass. E.g. Time keeping, appearance, 'cognitive skills???' At one placement I got a 1 'appears unable to take responsibility', when I had taken loads of responsibility and at the next placement fortunately I got a 4 - 'increasingly able to take responsibility in a number of different areas', when my behaviour hadn't changed at all!! And I hasten to add, not in any of the 12 criteria we are marked on are animals mentioned once!

Point number 2: In an industry where there's alot of competition with people wanting to work with animals, from school kids doing work experience, people trying to get placements etc it's very easy for us to get the shove and there not really be any comeback - and well... not really have any rights to stay. It's not so easy for us to put a hell of a lot of work in, travel 2 hours each way to a placement on public transport. Of course certain people can bask in the glow that they struggle into work with diarrhoea, nice, hope they washed their hands...

Point 3: Fitting in with the runnings of a small business. One placement I was one, I got 6 cases done in 9 weeks, this was partly because the assessor was a trainee and was never really mentored by the vet who was in charge of her as they were too busy running the practice...oh hard times, never mind about commitment to training and non-exploitation. The next placement I got about 20 cases done in 6 weeks - phew, there are some ethics around after all, again, I didn't have a miraculous change in personality, it was just that the assessor and other staff were committed and didn't fob me off and there's nothing like a bit of respect for human rights, we are animals too remember!!

Hi sal, my meds are called naramig......... dont know whats in them, they seem to work if taken quickly. I would like hypnosis though during one just to see what the effects were.

I dont feel crap after them which is a plus, b ut have to say anything is better than the pounding head so I would take lousy anyday over that. Not much makes me cry..... even a filling at the dentist with no local... cant abide it if it's not necessary, cant be bothered with the numb mouth for 5 hours after.......... but head pain I cannot take, especially migraine pain....... I actually have been at the point of tears with that.

sometimes I will back up meds with hypnosis and if I can catch it early will work really well, a lot of the time I use hypnosis as a stand alone as the mannitol+ combo I have been prescribed can leave me feeling lousy for days and is sometimes worse than having a migraine. Acupuncture works really well with me - but here is the snag it works very well and makes me dopey, and if I have put the points in I think it is only safe that I should be awake to take the points out!

Hey Sal, my last one lasted 5 days, vomiting for the first day along with the punding headache, the flashing lights etc, then it went inot a cluster migraine, which lasted for 4 days.

I know when I am getting one, I feel it at the back of my neck, and within 2 mins its unbearable, I have meds for it, but if I dont take then the instance I feel it, then there is no point.

One brilliant thing I found on my last one, was my power shower..........ahhhhhhhhhhh the relief with that battering full blast on your head. Mind you the pain comes back as soon as you get out, but at least you get some peace from it.

The only one I will comment on here is that her son was ill. If any of my children became ill while I was at work, I would leave to go home - no questions asked. Dare anyone question me on that - even my boss!

Family is more important than my job - anyday. My boss knows not to question me on this. Not that my children take sick often - they dont - but when they do, I will be with them, as their mum and quite frankly, I dont care about work then.

Sorry I know this thread has gone all lovey dovey now and didnt want to bring this back up but wanted to clarify what I meant.
I maybe worded it wrongly, I wasn't having a go for her or her son being poorly, she had rung and informed us about that and the weeks placement. Its after this that we havnt heard from her in 3 weeks, she just hasnt turned up.

My poor flatmate used to get migraines and they would cripple her. I am ashamed to admit I didn't realise how bad they could get but I am so much more sympathetic now. If someone calls in with one now i'm like 'quick, get back to bed! turn out the lights! arrgh!' I had to call in once with a toothache which sounded like the biggest copout ever but it turned out to be an abscess that had spread to four teeth. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. No pain relief would touch it. Four hours of root canal surgery and quite a few weeks and a lot of pounds( weight and cash ) lighter they felt normal again... I can't imagine how bad some of our dental patients must feel! they can't even take a paracetamol

My I need a drink now just thinking about it

Migraines ..well cannot physically move when I get one of those, so no way could I work, everything else like the sniffles, I would go in.
