I am looking to get some feedback from nurses/practices that have used/uses kits that laid out on a tray and sterilised then carried through to the vet whilst operating Vs wrapped kits...
We are considering changing the way we do ours - if any

Re: Wrapped Kits Vs Individual Instruments on Tray....

Thanks for your input Julie, really helpful :-D

Re: Wrapped Kits Vs Individual Instruments on Tray....

Hi, there is no problem with the way we do it currenlty but we have a new member of staff and they suggested it as a method they had used at a previous practice and thought it may benefit us - we are always looking to improve the way we do things so just wanted to get some feedback really before we decide.....

Re: Wrapped Kits Vs Individual Instruments on Tray....

We use both. Our smaller kits are wrapped and in bags, our larger kits are just instruments on a tray then the drapes and swabs are wrapped separately. Also, whenever we do orthopaedics or "big" ops, a lot of the bigger stuff is put on a tray and sterilised that way.

Pros and cons are that your wrapped kits can only stay wrapped for a certain time before having to be repackaged and resterilised. Unwrapped kits need someone scrubbed up to get the kits (our Vets just remove it from the autoclave once they're scrubbed up) plus, our Vet has informed us, you can't really sterilise them in advance and leave them in the autoclave as you may run the risk of instruments rusting which means you can only sterilise them on the day they're needed so when you get an emergency in, you have to wait for the instruments to cool down enough for touching and holding.

So I'd say both are just the same but I'd always prefer wrapped 'cos then they're always ready for use.

Re: Wrapped Kits Vs Individual Instruments on Tray....

Well, the first question, I suppose, is to ask why you're considering a change. Are you changing because there's a concern or an issue with current sterility? (both practices I worked in had wrapped packs we opened onto a drape, probably the same way quite a few other practices do it!)
