i agree. muzzles dont hurt, and the OP shows how unpredictable even nice dogs can be under stress/painful situations,

Not that I muzzle every dog by any means, but any Im not sure of? damn right, Its not a welfare issue, doesnt hurt them, isnt for long and can save serious injury. Often it means lighter restraint as well as they are effectively disarmed!

thank you! :)

*sigh*...she was fine with the muzzle. and if I have even the *slightest* doubt about any animal, the muzzle goes on. at the end of the day, me not getting injured is more important than the temporary discomfort of the animal I am trying to help. that's not me being mean, that's me making sure I can still come to work the next day.

As for the OP, we had a lurcher do this a few months back. she was Ga'd twice as her wound broke down and each time she had the same excitement reaction. she had an iv catheter placed each time so pretty certain none went extra vascularly. it has been noted on her record in case of future anaesthetics! still no idea what caused it, put it down to a reaction to the drugs for whatever reason. once round properly she was back to normal..she was definately muzzled for the second ga!!

Re: Dog Lost Her Mind!

Re: Dog Lost Her Mind!

Agree with you Fuzzyduck about handling on that one. I also think some propofol must have gone outside the vein for her to have reacted like that, it only needs a miniscule amount for it to sting like hell, probably made her freak out more as panicking about being muzzled aswell ?

Re: Dog Lost Her Mind!

you never know how a dog is going to react to being restrained and man-handled. in this case it was obviously a good thing she was muzzled. I like coming home at the end of the day with all the appendages I arrived with.

Re: Dog Lost Her Mind!

You routinely muzzle nice dogs?!!!
Some people report that when they have had Proprofol it stings like a b*tch- I've had it and was fine but maybe she eas extra sensitive to it?

I've seen some animals twitch a lot on occasion after induction- like an excitability phase- maybe she was just an extreme response?
