Try to feed the best I can afford. The reason I switched to Arden Grange was because at the time it was cheaper than JWB but still a hypoallergenic premium type food. As a practice we switched to AG from JWB because alot of our clients were worrying that the price of JWB was going up and up and up. AG had cranberry which I thought would help with whatever her weird Hills induced urinary problem was and also had glucosmine etc added. I advise clients to feed the best they can afford and to read the ingredients on the bag to help them decide

Sometimes my spaniel gets into the sheepdog food at the farm which is some sort of cheap working dog food and she farts like mad all evening - yuk! Alot of my relatives feed Beta because they cant afford the "premium" foods.

Sometimes I wonder what a difference it makes when for example; we might have patient A who gets fed Hills or similar its whole life only to get cancer or organ failure at the age of 8 and on the other hand we might have patient B who has been fed working dog mix and scraps all its life coming in at the age of 14 with lovely teeth and a waggy tail but needs a stitch up, the only clinical history being wormers and vaccinations which lapsed about 5 years previous! Weird huh!

Re: What do you feed your OWN pet?

I switched to raw on the advice of a vet who specialised in holistic treatment, i went with it becasue i had nothing to lose when my rottweiler had her leg amputated with a high grade osteosarcoma and she was given months to live. I decided against chemo and went the holistic route to keep her comfortable and i still have her 5 years later and she is so healthy (no more of the anal gland problems that she suffered with badly pre raw) I did lots of research into making sure i gave her a balanced diet and i have now changed all my dogs on to it and wouldn't change back

Cats are on hills dry as i don't feel i can get a balanced raw diet that they will eat, one cat will only eat raw heart and liver and the other won't touch it at all!!!

Re: What do you feed your OWN pet?

I am fascinated by some of the range of responses on here, we seem to vary so much in what we feed!
Also have a 10yo arthritic DSH on James Wellbeloved senior dry with a bit of the same in wet form to squirt her metacam on (she eats this immediately). I try to buy pet foods with minimal additives, no artificial colourings or flavourings, without eggs (will be from battery hens), without dairy etc, may be because I am vegan.
