Will agree with Kerry totally, we maybe nurses, but never think cleaning is beneath you, afterall we dont wanto to end up like th Human nurse do we when they took thta part out of the training........ all those horrid bugs we now cannot seem to control.....

Cleaning is a VERY IMPORTANT part of nursing.No one can do it like us, as they just dont have the understanding and knowledge as to why it must be done just so.

whoevers on theatre does theatre, same goes for prep and kennel block, on a busy day we all muck in, also have chart on wall, for designated virkon cleaning duties have own areas for that

We all muck in to get the cleaning done, there are charts on the walls that need to be ticked off to make sure everything is done. Generally the person who is in theatre for the week does most of theatre, and the person who is in kennels does most of kennels, but other nurses will come in and help.

Thanks for the replies.

At the moment we all muck in with the everyday cleaning but we have a non nurse member of staff who is reponsible for all the wiping of walls and the rest of the deep cleaning but she is now being allocated to reception duties.

I will probably give people set areas and then rotate this so that everybody gets different areas on a monthly basis and see how that works, As one is going to involve the toilet!

To some degree I think nurses are needed for cleaning, we are trained to know and understand diseases and how they are transmitted, so I think its a really important part of the job. I used to work at a practice which employed a lot of 'support staff' (nothing wrong with that at all by the way they where a great help) but every few months there would be a break out of some nosocomial infection on the wards and we couldn't figure out why. We discovered that the non-nurse trained staff where cleaning with house hold cleaners instead of proper veterinary disinfectants!!

I understand that it wasn't their fault as no one had apparantly told them but a good quality trained/ qualified nurse would have known better. The managements fault if you ask me trying to cut corners and employ cheap labour but its the animals that suffer at the end of the day

we all clean as we go during the week but on friday do one area from top to bottom each

Our practice are in the stone age! Nurses are needed for cleaning, holding animals and anaesthetics and thats it! Cant wait to move on when I'm qualified and actually be a nurse!

The general every day cleaning gets done by everyone every day.

We do have a cleaning rota whereby everyone has a specific area to manage, this involves deep cleaning (walls, scrubbing floors) and stocking up on various consumables. The rooms get rotated every couple of months so we all get a change and its fair. So on quiet days we just go and clean our rooms.

I am the only QVN in a small practice and I have to do all the cleaning in op + prep rooms+ Kennels. Reception staff do waiting room/surgery! Thats after being qualifed for over 20yrs!

We all just muck in I think that there is kind of an unspoken rule that if one of us does theatre two days running then then someone else will do it. Kennels, kennel walls etc. get done as needed depending on who is around.

Hi,

Where Im working at the mo in mixed practice - everyone just mucks into together, but we have check lists etc to meet a cleanliness 'standard'.

In my previous job, all the VN's were on a set duty e.g. kennels, prep, theatre - and it was kind of their duty to oversee that their area was cleaned and tidy. But usually what we found on busy, hectic days (most days!!) everyone just worked as a team to get all duties and cleaning done. It worked well having your own area to look after as all cleaning etc was divided and equal - but sometimes the practicality just wasn't there!
