We have a dog that we've just removed 6 million (maybe I exaggerate slightly!) struvite stones out of the bladder, but the owner refuses to give dog food.....

Re: Home cooked urinary diet advice

Alison.... we do love the term "lady garden" at our clinic! We find it a usful term.... when I used to groom I'd always tell clients that I'd give the lady garden and ring of fire a good trim!! haha!

Well, I finally managed to ge this lady to take 1 whole tin of Urinary food, and 1 Urinary pouch to try... it took all my powers of persuasion let me tell you. I haven't heard how she got on!!

However, I do have to say that this lady although a pain in the neck in this instance, actually has a heart of gold... during all this kerfuffle she has actually given us a donation to help pay for a stray dog to have an eye enucleation, spay, leishmania and 4d snaptests, microchip, and vaccinations, before we find her a home. So, she is a very sweet lady, just a little testing when it comes to trying to make her understand bladder stones!!!! haha!

Honestly, I still don't think she believes that she caused the problem, and just has her blinkers on about how to improve the situation now! She wouldn't even take the RC Urinary dry food to even try!!! However to make matters worse... this will give you some clue as to how the owner is...... I've called to check how Bunny is doing post op... all reported as doing well. However she calls me today to tell me that since the op last week she's probably only twice managed to get an antibiotic tablet into Bunny!!! Oh. My. Life. Please save me. So, she's coming in today for an injection. Are you seeing our predicament?!

I will contact Hills thanks, but you know when you get the feeling you're doing all this for nothing? Also regarding the comment of if they had a bladder full of stones would the owner change her diet? I can hand on heart say I honestly don't think she would! This is an old lady who is as overweight if not more as her dog....... Wish us all the luck in the world this evening... I'm going to try and force her to take a tine of urinary food, and also a pouch to see if she can get Bunny to eat it.................... I've got a feeling that she's not even going to.......... give me strength and patience.... if you hear of a vet nurse in Spain arrested for GBH will anyone visit me in prison?!!

Re: Home cooked urinary diet advice

[quote user="fiona redfern"]

Hi, Contact Hills as they used to have a list of home cooked diets for
various conditions. Protein is the biggest thing they need to cut
out..... and from your previous post i can see that may be difficult! But at least if you can show them a home cooked diet that i very much guess
will have very very little protein in it, they may be more likely to
feed it the prescription diet

I don't want to sound like i am teaching you your job but have they understood the explanation from you/vet on how these things form and WHY? After doing the City & Guilds in Small Animal Clinical Nutrition i was involved with a urinary case that the owners seemed to understand needed the diet but every time we tested a urine sample the pH was too high, it turned out they gave a sausage every week at dog training and the day after training was the day they used to bring in a urine sample! so even if they appear compliant they will still have their own ideas. the positive in your case is at least the owners are being honest with you from the start that they will find it difficult

I wonder what they would do if it were them that had a bladder full of stones - i bet they would change their diet!

Good luck

I saw a case in uni once, male dog. I was lucky enough to be in on the case...the surgeon asked me and another student to have a palp...he laughed at our facial expressions. I've never before nor since palpated what was basically a bladder full of parking lot gravel. The op was amazing...fine, it was a basic cystotomy, but you rarely get professors going "what the ****" when they open up and see this stuff face to face.

Re: Home cooked urinary diet advice

I just asked the vet.... fat little Bunny the dog has been living the life of luxury on chicken, ham, rice and pasta.......... because apparently she won't eat dog food. (well i wouldn't either if I was offered such delicacies!) She literally had a bladder full of struvite stones ranging from 4 big ones 2cm ish wide, to lots of little ones...... I have no idea how this dog was peeing! The only symptom she came in with was licking her lady garden....

Re: Home cooked urinary diet advice

I'd be quite curious as to what exactly the dog is fed currently to cause the struvite issue! :)
