I still live at home and have a 10 year old border terrier cross. The plan was for me and my bf to buy a house together this year and the dog would come with me. However due to the housing markey being rubbish, my bf isn't going to be able to

Re: Can you have a dog in a flat?

Thanks for everyones replies! Made me feel a bit more positive about the whole situation.

Spoke to bf today and he is a bit reluctant as although he owns his flat, he does have in his tenancy agreement that he can't have a dog. Saying that I know of at least 2 people in his block with dogs.

Mentioned it to my mum today and she said that she would miss my dog so maybe she will end up keeping her at home. Will just have to wait and see what happens I suppose.

Re: Can you have a dog in a flat?

Hell yes! I have three very active dogs in a first floor flat. We walk them more liveing here then we did temperally at my dads who has an acre garden! They don't use a garden just wait at the door for us to come and entertain them. They get 20min or so first wees walk, 20min toilet walk lunch time. 1 hour walk when husband gets home (works split shifts) then I walk them 1-2 hours after work. Then 20min last wees walk bout 11pm.

Yes it's a pain to take them out at 3am when they have the squits as have to get dressed but it's not really a big deal. I hate that many rehoming centres won't home dogs to people in flats.

Re: Can you have a dog in a flat?

i live in a first floor flat and have a small front garden and have 1 patterdale and 1 border terrier both crazy and there fine. they come to work with me and theres a nearby park to walk them. i dont see why it would be a problem.

Re: Can you have a dog in a flat?

I live in a fairly large house but for reasons best known to himself, my dog won't (and hasn't ever) use the garden to go to the toilet, meaning that I have to take him out several times per day and last thing at night. I can't see how living in a flat would really be any different to this, other than possibly the noise factor if he were to bark (but then plenty of people live in semi's), or if you have laminate floors and the tip tapping of his paws caused the dwonstairs neighbours to complain. It's a pain if you have a day when you feel rubbish and want to let the dog out and go back to bed - you still have to get dressed and go outside before doing anything else, but plenty of people, myself included, do it so it can work!

Re: Can you have a dog in a flat?

I'm in a first floor flat and have a border collie cross. She was used to a house with a garden until I moved about 5 years ago, she's completely fine with living in the flat. Sometimes I miss her having a garden to run about in because I can't let her off lead but we have plans to hopefully get a house with a garden at some point (hopefully she'll still be with us at the time, LOL)

Re: Can you have a dog in a flat?

I had my dog (with a similar outlook on life!) in a first floor fat. It was fine for him, he actually had more walks, as I had to go out of the house to let him do his business. It was a bit of a bind for me on those days whn you're in a rush, but wasn't a big deal. Only issue was going out for wees at 3am when he had a bout of cystitis. Not impressed on the 3rd night when he got outside and just looked at me, wagging his tail and didn't actually need a wee, but thought he'd try it on anyway!
