As long as you learn something that enables you to improve the welfare of the patients in your care, I would think this is a definite one to count. Preventative helth, decreasing stress and increasing enjoyment of the zoo animals can only be good for them! :)

Oooh I've been wondering a bit about this myself...

Being a zoo nurse, there are a load of conferences and meetings that aren't exactly "nursey" but really really help me do my job. These are often to do with management of captive animals, behaviour and enrichment (a biggie, and I wonder also if this is relevant to people doing dog/cat behaviour CPD?) and sometimes vaguely nursey (contraception / planned breeding programmes etc)

Any ideas if this is counted??

Good question, Sophie!

CPD is a very individual judgement; I certainly can't advise on what exactly your CPD should be.

The RCVS's notes on CPD for vet nurses (link above) basically states that it's education that furthers "...your professional competence as part of a planned development programme". So if you feel this NVQ helps you do a better job as a nurse, then you may be justified in counting it, but I would personally make sure I have plenty of clinical CPD as well in the time period.

Alternatively:

"Otherwise, undocumented private studies can account for up to five hours per year on average on the CPD Record Card."

Can we campaign for Disney movies to be included? That would be great! LOL....

Mark - on that subject you may be able to advise me on something. I'm currently undertaking an NVQ in management which isn't nursing specific but would it count towards some of my CPD requirement? I will be continuing to keep up to date with nursing issues and have already been on some courses this year for nursing skills but just wondered?

Essentially it's an acronym so that you don't have to say the whole phrase each and every time. Once you graduate, you'll be expected to perform 15 hours of training a year, (45 hours over 3 years) so that you keep your skills up to date.

It can be self study, lecture study, webinars, courses, a postgraduate degree (which is usually WAY more than 15 hours anyway!) as long as you can justify it as learning something. Hardly anyone will question you as long as it's reasonable - watching a sponsored webinar is fine, going to watch a Disney movie with animals isn't. And so on. :)
