So I've mentioned before that The Husband and I are moving to Edinburgh in about 2 years. We are working on our budget as far as what we can afford for housing and whatnot and am curious. What is the minimum wage out there, and does anyone have

Re: Wages

this is beginning to sound more promising than I thought. clearly nothing is a guarantee, but I am starting to have waking nightmares of no job/pouring coffee/selling my body/soul to make ends meet! fear setting on already, but this is soothing!

Re: Wages

when I worked for v4p reception staff were definitely paid a higher rate than the nursing staff - whether this is countrywide or just the place where I was working I dont know. National charity again reception staff were either on par or above the nursing staff. A couple of small practices I have worked this has also been the case, so I would imagine this is pretty much the norm. Saying that tho if you have a good receptionist they are worth their weight in gold if it keeps things running smoothlyand the waiting area happy - there is nothing worse than doing nurse consults when you have grumpy client after grumpy client come through the door

Re: Wages

Gosh, I sound really miffed!
Hmmm, at one practice (anonymous tip, whispered to me a few years ago) the receptionists got paid, pro-rata (most work part-time) MORE than the nurses, (students AND qualifieds). This was because of market forces, I was told. Go figure . Plus the job tended to 'roll-over' in staff more often, so employment opportunities were greater. Be a receptionist... at least, for the money. And the hours. And getting your foot in the door.

I am not dissing receptionists by the way...! . Plus, it was a few years ago so 'market forces' may have changed...

Just musing...

Ali

Miniumum wage is at the moment around £6.10 an hour. I would imagine that would be a basic starting rate for you, I'm a final year student on this wage level but it will increase when I qualify. Some practices I imagine would be happy to pay wages commensurate with experience, so I reckon aim between £6.10 to £7.00 starting wage?
