I appologise. I had had a bad day, was in a bad mood and probably posted before thinking how I worded it. I will delete the commets. Although, I do have to say I have had terrible problems with Anibase every time I have used them. But, I do apologise for the unnecessarily harsh comments.

I'd just like to say (publicly) a huge thank you to Lynne and Anibase for going to the lengths they have and for emailing me etc. Still no owner but we may be on the right track now, assuming doggy hasn't been dumped!

Thanks for the info Lynne. However, I was definitely not told that Anibase contacted the US or that the chip was sold in France but I will now pass this information on to the charity who currently have the dog in Cyprus, as they may be able to work back from there.

I would just like to clarify some details here. The chip in question is not a UK chip and therefore was not sold by Animalcare and ultimately not registered on Anibase. Chips starting with 9851 are also supplied to many other countries worldwide.

Anibase contacted the US on the caller’s behalf and it was identified that this particular chip was sold in France by Merial and the caller to Anibase has been given this information.

Anibase has endeavoured to help in a situation where the chip number has nothing to do with us.

Hmm, I don't know. I guess DEFRA would have records but I had enough trouble getting info out of the chip companies without a pin number as I no longer work in practice. One of the few occasions when data protection works against you (when you're just trying to help!) I guess I could try them ask if they would do the same as the chip company, ie IF they have a record, ask them to contact the vet/owner on my behalf so they don't have to give out any details to me. Worth a shot...

Wouldn't there be a note somewhere with him coming from over here? Like is there a database of pet passports somewhere?

I've phoned three times now and the box on the computer which usually says the vet practice name in says "no trace". The number is apparently non existent!

Anibase can most definitely trace back because I was able to find out where my kitty was chipped so I could phone them for some history. They told me no problem. I'd phone again and see if you can get someone else.

Ok, have just tried again and got someone who did seem to know what's what this time. However, she said that usually it would come up with the vet practice on their system, even if there were no owner details but it's just saying no trace. She also checked Europetnet, the European database and nowt there either. Think he's going to be a rehoming job, sadly. Mind you, I've posted on all the Cyprus forums and there are no posts about him being lost (which is what people usually do over there) so he may well have been dumped, along with the rest of them....

I agree, Anibase should know who they are selling their chips to - Pet ID and PeddyMark do, as well as Petlog. Either they haven't done their job properly, or they can't be bothered

Rose - Tried that. Anibase said they did not have access to the information about which practice the chip went to. I found that hard to believe as I know other microchip companies have been able to give me that information before but they said no, so I have to take their word for it.

Sal - The dog was found a fair way from Akrotiri (about 70 miles) or any of the other UK bases but I'll mention your suggestion to the lady who currently has him, just in case. Thanks!

Has the chip not been traced back to where it was implanted? Surely that would be the first place to look. Anibase should be able to tell you who the chip was sold to and the practice who bought the chip should then be able to give you the owner details at the time of implanting, which would be a starting point.
