Just a quick question, we have a little stray ragdoll at work that we have been holding for nearly 10 days now, so thus will need to rehome her. I was thinking of taking her on, though she is chipped (the chip isn't updated, and we cannot get

Re: Rehoming a chipped stray cat

I also rehomed a chipped cat, petlog asked that we sent a letter informing them of the change of ownership and they would write to the address they had on file for the chip. If there was no response within a certain time, they would change the details. In the mean time they put a note on the record giving the new address. This was ok for me, as I knew the old owner had not updated the chip details when they moved. (one of my hand-reared kittens I had homed with a "friend" who really let me down and I had to take the cat back off her after she failed to neuter, flea or worm her- grrrr)

Re: Rehoming a chipped stray cat

If you rehome straight from the owner and get a signed letter or something from them, the changeover is instant but because of the circumstances they have to make sure the owner is, in fact, uncontactable and the cat's not just been stolen.

Re: Rehoming a chipped stray cat

Thanks for the feedback so far! I assumed it'd be more complicated than that as it may appear the cat had been stolen or something. Sounds fair enough though, if they want to attempt to contact the owner as well I'd be more than happy. :)

Re: Rehoming a chipped stray cat

Hey, I just recently rehomed a chipped stray myself through work. Mine was slightly different in that we DID get in touch with the owner but he never bothered coming to collect her so we sent a letter saying if he didn't collect by certain date, we would rehome her.

You can contact the chip company but they will ask you to send a letter in with all the new details and since you don't have a letter or receipt to prove change of ownership, they will try to contact the old owners. The chip will change over to your details 28 days after the date they tried to contact the owners, assuming they don't get in touch with them.

Re: Rehoming a chipped stray cat

Just phone up the chip company and ask them to change the details. Tell them that the owner cannot be traced, and that the details on the chip are out of date, so the cat is being re-homed. I seem to think that we did something similar a few years ago for a dog re-homing where the owner was no longer available to contact the chip company.
