Karol A Matthews Veterinary Manual of Emergency and Critical Care by lifelearn. It's usually £80, but if you enroll on the course and speak to Clare you get it for £60.

The book has tiny writing... think of it like a text book of data sheet writing!!! But the info is easy to read - I can understand it so it must be!!

Thanks everyone, especially Stu. What's the name of the book they recommend please? I'm going to order the BSAVA ECC book next month and get started on that soon, but I'd like to take a look at the other book before the course starts too.

You can register at any time of the year I would think... but they only have 2 start dates: April and Sept.

I started in April. I'm only on the first unit at the minute. It seems really well put together. Clare at VetsNow is really helpful, answers emails quickly and doesn't leave you lost.

I would recommend you get the book that they recommend (for the discount price of £60) it's packed with info... and I've also got the BSAVA manual of ECC too...

The information they give you basically has all the information you need to answer the outcomes they extra info obtained just helps towards bettering your knowledge if nothing else. The units are well assembled and you have the option of handing all 3 in one go or one at a time... I choose one at a time this time round to make sure I knew what I was doing before handing all together and getting told what I done was wrong. The answers aren't restricted by a word count.

I did struggle with the nursing care plans in outcome one as I never studied these at college, but there is lots of helps and recommending reading to help you get through it.

So far (almost at the end of unit 1) I'd say the course is a healthy revision of triaging, general all over TPR etc etc checks and assisted feeding.

You could also sign up on www.vetecc.com site for a mooch around... it's a good site but people aren't on the forums like they are on here!!! I hope this helps!!! I would definately recommend it.

Thanks for that, I might do some more looking into the course then, I had just assumed that you needed to be in either dedicated OOH or at least a hospital scenario, I had been thinking of doing a few vetsnow shifts for experience anyway so this might work out quite well!

It's not based on case studies but course notes and reading around the subjects. A good practical knowledge of things which may present will help a lot which if you are in general practice you should still get to see - they don't all happen ooh

You could always ask to see practice at your nearest specialist ooh too.

Can I ask the guys that are doing the course, I don't work in a particular emergency or intensive care practice but it is an area that really appeals to me. Is this course mainly based on case study? ie - do you think it could be done whilst working in a general practice or do you think you would need to be in a hospital/busy practice environment?
