I totally agree with this, I keep seeing them and getting my hopes up too!!!!!

As mentioned before good things come to those who wait (well I hope thats true) Ive been looking too and hopefully something will arise soon :)

Apart from anything else, if I was a prospective employer and was looking for a new member of staff via forums etc, I'd be looking in the "situations wanted" section, not the jobs available!

i am also a prospective trainee and am finding it irritating reading these wrongly placed adds.

i am a member of several forums for various connections and is generally thought common curtesy that upon joining you should take a look around before posting anything to make sure you have the correct etiquette for the place in which you are posting and to make sure it is being posted in the most suitable area.

when i was a hotel manager had i ever seen one of these wrongfully placed ads i would actually have avoided hiring someone on that principle, so enteprising... maybe for some employers, but it would be detremental to any application they sent to me.

Yep, I'm getting annoyed by it now too! I wasn't too bothered before because I thought someone just made a mistake, but now there are a few (and one girl has done it a few times) and when you see it you get excited thinking its a real job! Could someone delete them, and tell the girls not to do it again.

I would actually like to alter my opinion slightly now.... there have been a couple of these over the past few days and now I know that there's a situations wanted section, it is ever so slightly annoying!

I applied for a job a few years ago and didn't hear anything for about a month and was then rejected. A week later I got an offer of an interview from the same practice as the day after my rejection letter was posted one of the SVN's handed her notice in.

we keep cvs - I know because I file them , but we havnt had a vacancy in the last 2 years and we arent a training practice. But if we did have a vacancy then that file would be coming out

Thanks for the advice, I'll try the cv spam approach and see if I get anywhere. Just wondering, if any employers actually keep cvs on file when there is no current vacancy, and resurrect them again if one comes up, or if they gather dust and mould in the back of the filing cupboard or bin.... Must develop more creative hobbies, I haven't been tap dancing since I was 10. Although I do love the idea of giraffe painting!!

I agree with Arlo - my only experience of using the situations wanted section was managing to get myself back onto one particular pest of an agency's regular telephone list, having taken me two years to get them to remove me previously (and they're still calling me now, even though I've told them I haven't been in nursing for the past year!!!)

Having said that, I have found several of my previous jobs by sending out speculative cv's so it can work.

I have to admit, I've used this site for years on and off and have never noticed the situations wanted section (doh!) - nor have others who have posted here obviously, nor has a colleague of mine in practice. Maybe if you're not looking for something it passes you by. I'll know where to look in future should I need to.

Anyway, it still doesn't particularly bother me, although I do agree that people could do well to spell check their posts and make sure they're professional looking, wherever they put them.

And, by the way, tap dancing is NOT cool. Ever.

I don't know if I'd eat something sent to me by a total stranger. Apologies if I sound utterly paranoid; you hear the occasional story about the laxative cupcakes.

My personal favourite standout on a CV is the personal profile. This is the bit where you can break out from the formalism of the CV a little bit and sell yourself (in the nicest possible way!) A few sentences that tell you who you are and where you get off.

The main problem with sending mass cv's out is that sometimes, with the greatest possible respect, sometimes the CV isn't very good. Typos, formatting, how to spell veterinary, and the letters that talk about how desperate we are to work with animals. (Note: I don't mean everyone. I have seen a fair few CV's in my various jobs and some of them are quite scary.)

Also, personalize your intro letter. Avoid "to whom it may concern" if at all possible. Address it to someone. Check the practice's website and put the practice manager's name on it, or the head vet nurse. People respond better when they see their name.

Spell check. Please. Modern word processing software does check your work for spelling. This is a HUGE part of your first impression. If you're typing your CV on a computer you have a spell checker.

Interests - write 3 or 4, maximum. Unless they're really exotic like giraffe painting or something. :) Interests are one bit where you can really stand out with something really unusual you do - who knows, they might invite you in just to find out how you got started in whatever you list. (One nurse I know actually does know how to tap dance!) If you like to read, fine - mention a specific type of book or style of magazine you like. Make it specific. :)

I agree with you, and have just deleted one that looks like it might have been popping up more than once!

As others have said, there is a 'Situations Wanted' page for those people that want to post that kind of thing.

Personally, I think the chance of a 'situations wanted' ad producing results is very small, and probably more likely just to generate calls from recruitment agencies! I think most employers like to advertise jobs and see who applies. However, members asked for the 'sits wanted' page so I put it there.

Anne-Marie, I am not a veterinary employer, so take what I have to say with a pinch of salt. But in my experience, in difficult economic times, you need to make yourself stand out from every other Tom Dick or Harry. When I was looking for a job as a pilot during a recession, I went and knocked on hangar doors. If I was looking for a job in practice today, I would be knocking on practice doors.

Alternatively, send something creative to the practice you're targetting. A box of chocolates, for example (something to chew on while you look at my CV). They don't need to be expensive, and if I worked at the practice that got the chocs, I'd tell others in the area about you if I couldn't give you a job myself.

Just an idea!

What would be the suggested alternative to mass cv sendouts so? (apart from misplacing a job seeking ad in the situations vacant forum). Any suggestions appreciated, some of us are very keen to get into the industry and start off as VNAs or Trainee Vet Nurses and have to get a foot in the door somehow!!

It does strike me as someone who has just come on the forum recently and just looking for jobs, rather than someone who uses it like the regulars. Which means they are not aware of the protocols and other options available.

Its only my opinion and, from what a previous poster has said, its obviously not everyone's opinion, but I would not be interested in a potential employee who posted in this way. I'm sure its just a new idea or desperation, but it doesn't seem professional. I'm a bit traditional and I like people to apply for jobs that are advertised. I'm not even too keen on mass cv send-outs to all practices in the area. But, again, its just my personal opinion and it has worked for some people!
