I have always understood that RVNs are allowed to give the 2nd vaccination BUT cant sign any form of vaccination record/certificate......you have to run round the practice finding a vet free to sign it!!!!!

ITS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BLOODY ANNOYING WHEN WILL THE RCVS REALISE RVNS ARE PROFESSIONAL, RESPONSIBE & RELIABLE PEOPLE WHO ARE CAPABLE OF BOTH GIVING THE 2ND VACCINATION & SIGNING THE VACCINATION CARD!!!!!!!!! JUST ONE OF MANY FRUSTRATING POINTS OF BEING AN RVN THAT MAKES ME SO ANNOYED!!!!!!!!

I am sorry but am I the only one who finds it ridiculous that we are competant enough to give the second vacc but not good enough to sign the card !!! Another RCVS ridiculous rule.

This is very interesting,and I have to say quite worrying - and needs clarifying as it was the RCVS who advised me I could sign a record but not a certificate.I am wondering if this has changed and when it changed? I was signing vaccination records every working day between @2005 and 2009

if this is the case are the RCVS policing the breeders who administer their own vaccines and sign their own records and rescue centres that also may be administering vaccines and signing records or in the case of rescue centres is it the vets who sign records where they have supplied vaccine but not necessarily administered it?

yes you can sign a vaccination record but not a certificate.We had this problem at V4P when we changed from v4p vaccination booklets to manufacturers certificates - it was a pain. Dont know how they got around it in the finish

Sal, I'm just thinking about our dog vaccs ..... We use Merial purevaccs which say vacc card but have recently changed over to Virbac dog vaccs that say cert of vacc on them.... So we can sign 2nd cat vaccs can't we? My brain is very dense at the moment!! Great idea... Will contact Virbac but have just ordered and received anew box of printed vacc cards.... Typical eh? :-)

which vaccine company are you using? - if they do your certs it might be worth asking if they do vaccine records instead ( I might be wrong but I think Merial might do these) will look at some of the ones coming through our practice for you

We have just recently been given the OK by our boss to start doing 2nd vaccs but our vacc cards are certificates of vaccination so has to have a VS sign them, but there was an article recently in one of the vet publications (?Vet Times) about vets not signing for things not witnessed, which is right and fair enough, so we have postponed starting nurse 2nd vaccs for now..... She is going to pass it on to our boss and however much I really want us to do as much as we can as nurses, pressure shouldn't be put on the vets and they really need to look into the legalities for themselves..... Maybe the RCVS could finallu give us and VS's some proper guidelines for what we can and can't do, and give guidance to the vets as well?

from memory, this was in the light a few years ago and I read an article on it - may have been the vet times? Anyway, what sticks out was one part where it read that some vets would actually ignore if a pet vacc record had been signed by a VN?!!!! Cant remember much else, dont know if that meant the vaccinated again or whatever

basically if it says certificate on the vaccination card then vet needs to sign it, or if the signature box asks for veterinary surgeons signature then that is what it should be.

We sign the vaccination books and if a client forgets to bring it with them on the day of the vaccination and bring it in at a later date then we fill out the details from the history and sign them. only qualifieds though.

Thats what I was led to believe too, and I think it is right, you can sign a record but not a certificate.

when I looked into this before this is what I was told - anybody can sign a vaccination record but it should be a vet that signs a certificate and also any record that asks for a veterinary surgeons signature in the signature box. We can do a 2nd vac as the health check was carried out by VS at 1st vax, but if the animal is coming to your surgery for the first time (ie 1st vax given elsewhere) then the 2nd vax should only be given if the animal has been examined by the vet in your own practice.

some one will correct me if me if i am wrong, but i think we are allowed to sign for 2nd vacc provided the vet has seen and given clean bill of health at first vacc. also must say signed on behalf of, or something similar i cant quite remember that bit.

In my old practice the vets aways signed vaccination records. But in my current place my boss says it is fine for me to do them. Not sure if that isacceptable- anyone know the "law" on these things?
