We are having an open day and each member of staff was going to make something (cake and cookies) but my boss thinks that there will be a problem selling home made food like we have to get a licence or have our kitchens inspected.
Just wondering

Re: Selling food at open day

That is interesting (about the ingredients, I mean) as my guy at the local council (licensing within environmental health) told me you only needed ingredients listed if the food was packaged/pre-wrapped and it didn't apply to home made. Seems like another grey area where one half of the official people don't know what the others are doing! I'd definitely go with having them available if possible though - that way no one can say you didn't do it right!

Re: Selling food at open day

thanks for all the info you guys have been a great help

Re: Selling food at open day

[quote user="Lauren Innes"]

when you are sellng homemade food, you must ensure you label all the products with clar allergy warnings. For best practice, make sure you have a full list of ingredients you have used available for your customers. for more info visit www.food.gov.uk

I phoned my local council and was advised of the following:

As long as the food is made off the premises ie home baked, you do not need a license or kitchen inspection (it's the same at church fetes etc).

If the food is open ie unwrapped, it does not need to display ingredients as it is classed as home made. I didn't want people breathing and snotting all over mine so just took a roll of clingfilm and covered the large plates which the cakes were displayed on so that they weren't individually wrapped but people could see what was there. I also provided disposable gloves and tongs for my volunteer to use when putting them in bags. Of course, if you're selling cakes to be eaten on the day, they could just be given it in their hand rather than a bag. I was advised to make sure the volunteer wasn't handling money and cakes with the same gloves on.

I was also advised, just to cover myself, to display a sign saying that there was no guarantee that no nut products had been used.

The only other thing I could see possibly being an issue is the fact that you may be selling/serving them in a place that usually has lots of animals visiting but I think you'd be very unlucky to get a local inspector visiting you and if so, just play dumb if you've followed all the other tips!

Hope that helps.
