I am always told the rate is £10-£10.50 and usually just accept this. Reading the posts, having been a QVN for 10 years, I'm worth more! I never had to argue at any end of the country only had one turn me down as he could get people for £10 fine but l am making a living not moonlighting. I also have the advantage of being a LTD company so there is no worries if taken on as they hire my company not me.

Re: Locum rates

I think it might depend on where in the country you are aswell, but I agree with mrsspider, locum agencies will try and give you as little as possible whilst making a massive profit for themselves!

Re: Locum rates

I have been a locum for the last year and refuse to work for less than £12 per hour but normally aim for £13-£14. the locum agencies are charging a small fortune to practices and then trying to pay as little as possible to the nurse so you def need to watch them.

I will definately negotiate my rates next time. I am going to see how I get on as I haven't been in practice for 2 years, so might be crap lol! I'm registered with loads of agencies. I have used Carlton in the past and they are lovely!

Re: Locum rates

Definately ask for more - I have locumed on and off for the last 6 years. I was paid £10 per hour at RVC, but most private practices were happy to pay £12.50 ph (I was using a locum agency but the practice paid me directly and PAYE)

I have over 18 years experience and thats my bargaining chip - I usually explain that I have been SA/Mixed and referral and can pretty much 'hit the ground with both feet running'

You could always change locum agencies!? (I've always done ok with Carlton Professional)

Good Luck

They can't do anything more than say "no". That said, it will often depend on your specific experience. Are you a nurse with general experience, or do you have specific interests you're very good at that are very hard to find?

The better you can define yourself, the more valuable you will appear.
