They have no access to water overnight unless exceptional circumstances eg hot weather, elderly or ill.
I found this unacceptable but the kennel owner seemed

Re: Kennels leaving water out overnight

I used to work in a kennels, I can't remember the start time 7-8am I think, we'd let them all out for runs, clean them out, pop them away, feed them. Then move dogs who were going home, bring dogs in, lunch time run and feed for some. Then more moving cleaning and admiting, evening feed and run, then time for bed with bed time treats bisc, topping up water as required during the day. If they tipped the bowls over they got a door ring holder for the bowl! In the summer, we'd leave the runs open to allow fresh air and someone would come in at sunset to put the shutters down and give bedtime biscs and top up waterbowls! The challenge always was to shut them in without setting them off barking! Most dogs had put themselves to bed by this point anyway. We had bedrooms and enclosed runs, with grass runs for letting them into. Even had a sep "old boys" block!

In the winter they went to bed earlier as it was cold wet and dark! Busy day, but always fun! The cats were seen in the morning and evening. Eventually I managed to spend more time with the cats, said it was v. important to do!

Re: Kennels leaving water out overnight

Hi I worked in a quarantine and normal boarding kennels - dogs were let out @ 7am in the morning and put away by the owner at 10pm before she went to bed - water was left in the kennels and the feeding was very much tried to stick to the animals routine and diet - although it took up alot of time it was still very rewarding.

Re: Kennels leaving water out overnight

I hope that this isn't the 'norm' as that is disgraceful. I would be appalled to think that this is happening on a regular places in kennels. All the kennels that I know all have last walks around 9-10pm and are then back at 6am for morning rounds. They are all provided with water overnight also. Anywhere that doesn't provide this service should be reported!

Re: Kennels leaving water out overnight

Leaving the dogs with no water so for long is awful! goodness! The kennels ive used in the past have lights out at 10.00 and back again at 6 am for morning walks - they say they much prefer to do that than have pee in every single kennel in the morning. They leave water in overnight Im sure. That makes no sense for kennels to take it out if they are blatently going to have to mop up pee in the morning anyway!?

Re: Kennels leaving water out overnight

Many years ago (am talking over 15yrs), the guide dog centres used to switch off the water supply to the kennels overnight, not sure if they still do this now but I too was horrified, even back then

I worked in a kennel from the age of 16 for many years. We put the dogs in at 5.30pm and they were not let out again until 8.00am the next morning. They also did not routinely have water in their kennels overnight. This was mainly down to the dogs playing with/ tipping over the bowls and making noise/mess. And you are right, nearly all the kennels needed a proper scrub out in the mornings! It never sat well with me, but being young and excited to get a job working with animals I did not really question it at the time. I def think kennels should be looked at closer and questions asked by prospective clients such as 'is water provided overnight' - something most owners probably take for granted! They tend to be inspected once a year by the local authority, usually someone who has no training or clue about animal care, to get thier license.

Re: Kennels leaving water out overnight

Very wrong, like you say no access to water and also no access to toilet, must be lots of soiled thirsty animals in the morning.
