I was really late in spaying my female rabbit (completely my fault and i now realise the harm it can cause by not doing it!) My female used to pull her hair out all the time and actually, once I spayed her she has never done it since! x

I can't add much to the good advice uve been given already. Just confirm that spaying will remove very high likelihood of uterine neoplasia; I question the thought behind letting her have a first litter and thus avoid uterine neoplasia as there is (I have been advised) no known science to back this up whatsoever; rabbits will remain sexually receptive until mated (ie are not just seasonally receptive say like the cat); nesting behaviour will evidence in hair plucking; hormone 'raging' is common ie grumpy and will attack... as I said, all things uve been advised about. Neutering is the best advice all round unless u want to breed from her. Hope this helps.

Would definately recommend spaying her sooner rather than later. The hair pulling is probably due to nesting behaviour and where the behavioural probs and grunting come in. Spaying her will hopefully mellow her out a bit. Also you will be at risk of her developing uterine cancer in the future without spaying her.

I'm doing the excel rabbit VN certificate just now and from all the research I've done, it has been quoted anything from 60-95% of female rabbits will end up with uterine cancer by 5 years if left unspayed.

Spaying will also reduce her risk of mammary tumours and cysts, and hormonally linked behaviour problems like aggression etc.

Rabbit anaesthesia is pretty safe nowadays, but the sooner you get her spayed the better in terms of her age etc.

Our practice always recommends neutering female rabbits as ~80% of entire female rabbits will get uterine cancer at ~5yrs, I know this has nothing to do with the bald patches though! :)

Thanks Sarah, I always heard that if they had a litter they had less chance of uterine cancer!!??

Re: Spay Rabbits??

Our practice always recommends neutering female rabbits as ~80% of entire female rabbits will get uterine cancer at ~5yrs, I know this has nothing to do with the bald patches though! :)

Re: Spay Rabbits??

Just been to check them and found her bold patches are bigger cant see any dandruff, see pics!.
