My last encounter with a hamster was only the other week and I needed a towel (would have used a vetbed if had been available!) to ensure I didn't come into contact with it. Unfortunately it wriggled free and dropped down the side of the table and could have been badly injured (it wasn't but could have been). I tried to grab it but, to be honest, I was shaking like a leaf at the thought of handling it so I don't think I was as quick as I might have been.

I never used to be like this and kept them as a kid. I developed this irrational fear after a long stint locumming for Companion Care back in 2000. We had to health check every hamster that was sold and they used to get handed to us in a little box to remove and exam. Just the way they turn their upper bodies round and go into that defensive position with teeth and claws showing makes me quiver as I waiting for an imminent attack! Urghhhhhhh.

The farce is I have NEVER been bitten by a hamster

Re: Phobias (caution for all arachnaphobics!)

EKKK they look like the bigger version of my spiderflys!!!
I have a phobia of those horrible flying mites that live on wild birds (like crows and esp pigeons!). I have named them in the practice 'spider-mites!' as they seem to scuttle and then fly at your face. I once carried a badly injured crow from someones boot into the surgery and one of the little buggers crawled up my arm!!! Not nice, and pigeons seem to haveloads of them! They are they only things i hate!!!!!

Re: Phobias

My biggest phobia is vomit/vomiting. I literally cannot cope with any related situation, I can't be around drunk people for fear of someone vomiting and I HATE hospitals for fear of catching a V&D bug.

Unfortunatly my man seems to be quite prone to tummy bugs and I won't see him when he's got one, don't know what would happen if we were living together. One night a few years ago, my brother was up during the night being horrendosly sick and I'm still haunted by the sounds, I go to bed every night worrying that I'll be woken up again by the sound of someone vomiting.

Other less odd fears are spiders/insects and ill people in general; I also cannot stand people coughing or burping (again because in my head, burping leads to vomiting..) The sound of someone coughing is like nails on a chalk board to me.

I worry all the time that I'm about to go down with some horrid bug, even when I feel completely normal.

(This is why I am in the veterinary nursing industry not human nursing!!)

Re: Phobias

Clowns area big no no find them dead dead creepy (maybe its cos I saw IT at a young age)

She hates people tapping their fingers on a surface.......I know it can be annoying anyway but she freaks out..... she screams if you do it and covers her ears. Also she has a phobia of our couch, she wont sit on it unless she is wrapped up in a blanket, and she cant touch it at all.

Re: Phobias

OMG that spider pic made by blood run cold. Another is of flying but it ain't as bad as it used to be after i flew to Chicargo and back a couple of years ago. My worse phobia is dying. I have severe panic attacks about it and the only way i relax is by telling my fella, i'm having bad thoughts and by doing sudoku. I can't bear the thought of not being alive or the thought of my family and friends dying. I've had this for years xx

Re: Phobias

Sorry guys I should have explained a little more about the camel spiders, they belong to the arachnid order but are actually called Solifugae or Egyptian Giant Solpugid, making them not true spiders like scorpions (in fact they have more in common with scorpions). There are roughly 900... yes 900 species of camel spider (as if 1 wasn't enough??!! ), They are incredibly fast runners topping speeds of up to 15 miles per hour . They live in desert climates, Although not poisonus they deliver a very nasty bite.

There as been a report that a soldier returning from Iraq to the U.K. accidentally brought one home in his kit and it bit the family dog and kiled it, google for newspaper reports...ok I'm going to spend the next half hour rocking in a corner...
