This is pretty much what I am writing about, owners don't realise that they're at fault! At the end of the day, it's all down to owner education, let's just hope owners start listening.

Re: Obesity vs pet welfare

Thank you!

Re: Obesity vs pet welfare

Hi Laura

I have looked into the Pet Food Manufacturers Association already (but thank you!) but I haven't looked into the BVA, so thank you for the post :) I'm so glad people are actually willing to help me here! :D

Laura.

Re: Obesity vs pet welfare

Laura, these links might help you:

Agree totally. Years ago we had a client who was easily 25 stone, and she had an absolutely enormous diabetic cat who we couldn't stabilise. Found out through chit chat with her one morning that she would get up in the middle of the night and eat cornflakes with sugar and fresh cream - and of course the cat just had to have some......We tried broaching the weight issue with her to no avail. Ironically her hubby was the local GP.

Thanks!!
"People who refuse to put seriously fat pets on a diet could be prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act - and face a fine of up to £20,000 or even 12 months' jail" - I didn't know this!! I will look further into it... The Daily Mail isn't exactly *ahem* an academic resource :P

Have you tried PDSA? They run a slimmer of the year comp for pets so you may get some good info there. Also RSPCA poss?

I suppose in a way ppl who continually over feed their pets could be falling foul of the Animal Welfare bill - "the need for a suitable diet"?? Be interesting to see if anyone has ever been pulled up that way??

Hi Katie,

Yeah I tried the PDSA and RSPCA, i got a rather rude letter from the PDSA saying that they don't offer help with assignments - but that wasn't what I was asking! I'm just trying to promote welfare.. I thought they'd be up for that! I haven't had a reply from the RSPCA...

And that look on it is exactly what i'm trying to find!
