I got the case logs before my course actually started (was able to download them from the SJS training website) and I took them into practice and began searching for cases. I was jotting down ideas, notes etc I found it extremely helpful to jot down notes and things as they helped me later on if I found a suitable case! :) x

I am just finished the course, but we never got our caselogs until we started college x

Hi. I'm also starting in september, and was told that I could start the caselogs now? I thought that was a bit wierd, is it true!!! Would it matter that the dates on consent forms etc, would be before I commenced the course?

I'm the same Shelley, I'm training for my ANA and waiting to go to university in 2011 to study Veterinary Nursing :) I get to do just as much practical stuff as student nurses really, except obviously schedule 3!

If you need anything like help with the ANA, I'm here for anyone who needs it :) Although I'm a struggling student myself I'll try my best to help - thats just who I am :) x

I'm hoping to start this course in September at Myerscough but distance learning. It's not for a few years that I start my student vet nursing stuff, so I requested to do it to prepare for it - despite having all my GCSEs.. my employer is even going to pay for it all which is great! I think I'll be getting a lot of support for it also as I'm in a fairly big practice with a lot of assesors and around 4 student nurses (and another 4 in waiting) who all support eachother and allow for us to study and ask plenty of questions and things at work. My head nurse LOVES teaching people also and always takes time out of what she's doing to do so! I'm really looking forward to it all and to get some theory learnt as I'm currently a Kennel Assistant (for the time being whilst I await a space for SVN status as they only send a few at a time to college) but have been doing a lot of practical stuff in practice which the student nurses are doing. :)

Mine is all through 'distance learning' or correspondence. However, I've just completed a revision week at college where I got to meet the other girls from different branches of our practice who are also on the course.

I didn't really have any major issues, however I know that the other girls didn't feel supported well enough. It was the first time our college had done the course this way, so I think it'll improve over the years, but some things I would suggest are:

*Allocate an 'assessor'. I was lucky enough to have a colleague who's a fantastic, approachable nurse, who had once done the Pre-Vet Nursing course. We had somebody from head office come to the branch every 4-8 weeks, but that was more to record how much we'd done as opposed to help us with work.

*Allocated time. As I said above, my colleague was great in helping me out where she could, but we're an extremely busy practice, so instead of having time to sit down together every one or two weeks, I would just ask the odd question if I was stuck on something. Head office allowed us to work from the staff room when we were quiet, however in reality we are just too busy and I never had time to do this, not once!

* Regular in-house tutorials. I'm not sure this would work in a smaller practice, but we have 6 trainee ANAs throughout the branches, so it would have been great to get together once a month and have someone from the practice go through some A & P (or whichever!) topics with us.

Exams are coming up very, very soon. So revision, here I come! Argh.

I did mine correspondence and got very little support from my work collegues. I worked my butt off and gained a distinction. i found it hard because its been 10 years since i last studied for anything! I put about 5/6 hours per week into it and that was while working full time. I was lucky to get even half an hour in work time to study and like i say i didnt get alot of support. I did mine thru sjs training and i was able to call for help and advice but only did it a few times.

I got most of my info from the course notes and the vn books i got on ebay. I also got the ana book, thats really helpful too.

I thought the case logs were ok, difficult to get into but once i started i loved doing them.

you wont find out what mark you got until you have sat your exam, i think, i didnt anyway. i was just told i had passed my case logs and then had to wait for exam results.

Ahhh mine is through correspondence also! I'm finding it ok -- ratehr up and down sometimes though! I get a bit "flappy" (as my mum says) about where to find information and things ! At the moment I am struggling a tad with the cat/dog hospitalisation case log ! x x x x

Your College or a nurse at your work can have a look through them and say they are ok etc, but all your case logs need to be sent of to marked by proper examiners.

You hand it to your college and they will send them all off, thats what are college is doing.

And you will be given a Pass, Merrit or distinction.

Ive completed my caselogs and passed them ok. but wasnt given either a Pass, Merrit or Distinction? do they not do that anymore?

I am currently doing my A.N.A day release.

The portfolio there are 8 cases you have to do.

1.Short talk

on an Ap subject, We had to get up in class and do a talk on a subject. You have to give out a hand out or do the talk on OHP.

2. cat/dog hospitalisation

3. exotic hospitalisation

4 pet travel scheme

5 zoonotic disease

6 bandaging

7 job application

8 client survey

Each case log will require things you have to put in them, like the zoonotic case log you have to do a risk assesment.

You tutors at college will have a look at your case logs like your accessor or nurse at work, but the portfolio when completed will go off to the examaners to be marked. You will either get a Pass.Merrit or distinction.

I know the NVQ is going to be alot harder as you have to write the case log up in a certain time frame. The ANA you can write about a case that came in a year ago etc.

AS far as I know they are easier..... as you can cross ref now, whereas before it was like writing lines at school with the constant repeating of yourself.There are no longer a set aqmount of cases either, you just cover the scope..... so basically if you get an anaesthesia case that needs x ray, surgery, fluids etc it is so much less work

Tell me about your portfolios. A couple of friends of mine want to start in Sept & are woried re the Portfolio. hte last one i saw was about 7 years ago so its a bit out of date. How much work was it / is it. Who assesses it? What in it?

Im doin mine at the moment- my exams on 8th of june. ahhhh lol i go to colege on a monday n then jus revise the rest of the times. Ive completed my keys skills maths and english and my caselogs which have been passed soo all i am concentrating on now is revising.. lol Gd luck :) x

I did mine on day release (my day off!!) got no support from work although my boss did pay my fees.

Hi Faye,

Yes I do mine through day release. it has its ups and downs. I am one of the more mature students on the course and on the whole its pretty good though you always seem to get one in class that acts up just like school.

good luck with the course I still have 3 case logs to get done by April and then its revision time.

Are you doing yours with Myerscough? When I did mine I was told the tutor would contact me on a regular basis for updates as to how I was doing, though usually I had to end up contacting her. However my tutor was really helpful if I had concerns and generally my practice were pretty supportive too. How are you getting on with it?

Hi Faye,

I get alot of help either from college and through my practise. My head nurse and the other qualifieds are always willing to help and sit down and talk through things with me I dont understand either cause I have missed lectures at college through being ill or when I have re read the notes and not sure of something. Alot of case log work I write up at home and it is then checked by the practise and then again by college.

My home life is pretty busy me and my partner have set aside monday evenings for us and the rest of the week is hit and miss as to when we see each other I have the step kids every other weekend so that takes my time and I travel for an hour to get to work and then home.

Its all possible at the mo but will have to be super organised for the nvq in september
