I think the most important learning for me that came from those 'fun' staff meetings was that even serious subjects can be discussed and the overall atmosphere can be kept fairly light. You can achieve some of the stuff you need to achieve without it all getting confrontational. The 5 minute per subject rule worked really well because everybody got a chance to have their say and no single staff member dominated the meeting (as often happens) and because everybody knew they only got their five minutes of fame it sort of made them think more about what they were going to say to get their point across effectively. If somebody suggested something and it wasnt possible, it was always explained why it would not be possible AT THAT TIME ie it wasnt dismissed out of hand.

We were a small practice and mostly the serious stuff took up no more than 20 - 30 mins and then we had the fun bit to balance it. We did tend to sort out minor probs in the practice as they occurred and not let them fester till the next meeting and as a team we were pretty close knit.

BTW - the swimming pool was the bosses idea, mine was the paint ball night

Us nurses used to have such long lists for our nurse meetings but as nothing ever happens/ our ideas are always pooh poohed we now dont have anything to bring up as we all feel there is no point.. Its quite sad actually and always sends you away feeling like shit!! :(

ours can be a bit funny sometimes, one of the vets who is our clinical head nurse says he only has 5 points so will only take half an hour but then we go and get our own list, you should see the faces drop

no I didnt drown anybody - but you know all those kiddie floats that they have for the kids play time.........

but I'll tell you what its bloody hard for somebody to come over all superior and be taken seriously wearing speedos never had a problem with them after that Daniel Craig he wasnt

Swimming pool may be a bit dangerous - you may want to drown someone with their comments, can't stop the urge and just do it!! Then who knows what would happen!!

one place I worked we used to have a 'staf meeting ' once a month. different restuarant each time (well in the finish it was down to 4 and we had to get sneaky about booking in - we had a reputation for late finish and being a bit noisy. so in the finish we had to book it in names they wouldnt recognise- and once we were there? well it was too late to turn us away )

Staff meetings always ran to an agenda - strict 5 mins to mention whatever it was, discuss and then move onto the next item, no alcohol to be drunk before the end of the staff meeting and then a meal at bosses expense

strangely we never had that many problems. We even had a staff meeting in the shallow end of the local swimming pool on one occassion followed by a chinese meal

I've been there too!! Nothing positive in a meeting - just you're all crap & costing us money!!! Leave the meeting feeling like poo and worthless.

I try and arrange a nurses meeting every 4-6 weeks and are helpd during the day. It can be a bit of a pain as its guaranteed one of the vets will need a hand with something, however none of the nurses seem that interested in evening meetings either! May have to bribe them with pizza and doughnuts next time

we have a practice meeting with wine and pizza etc bought by practice cooked by nurses!! this is every 6 mths and nurse meetings the same every 3 mths, meetings are always after work, and nurse meetings sometimes take place in each others houses,or at practice.

We have a full practice meeting once a month, lunch (yummy baguettes mmmm) is provided by the practice. We don't get a lunch break on that day as the meeting is 2 hours long (one hour of discussion, one hour of in house CPD from reps etc).

The vets have a vets meeting once a month, lunch is provided for them then as well.
