We just get them when they are smelly and horrible!!!! Makes us a bit cross cleints who go for cheap vaccines then come back to us for anything else, they just flit round then it makes everything harder, having to get people to find out vacc card, or ring th practice to check they were done. I wish people would stick to 1 practice foreverything!

Re: Parvo again!

Hi yes it is definitley parvo as has been tested. Due to our run of bad luck we always test anything suspect now.

The other local practices don't seem to be seeing as many as us but wonder if some are being missed as they don't test very often if at all. This particular pup is a husky. We recommend 12 week finish on vaccines but again are one of the few practices round here that do, and we advise an extra parvo at 5-6mths due to the risk in the area, again only 1 other practice advising this. We do have to do some 10 week finishes though, some owners insist and some have had 1st vac with breeder at 6 weeks. We don't get a massive uptake on the extra parvo, prob about 50%. Dog is holding its own at the moment but still haem d+ and won't eat, very difficult to assess how it is feeling as it unfortuntely isn't the friendliest and we get greeted with a curled lip even when trying to put water bowl in etc, so even when its better I don't think it will be a waggy happy dog!!!

Re: Parvo again!

Thats an interesting point you have made Hissycat.

The majority of parvo cases we treat are of the black and tan breed. Rottiweilers, Dobermans, black and tan terrier/crossbreed.

I did hear somewhere (can't remember where) that the black and tan breeds are more susceptible to parvo than any other, has to do with their immunity apparantely though I dont know if this is fact or not

Re: Parvo again!

In my last practice we had a run of vaccinated rotties contracting parvovirus. Can't remember their ages but were young. It was definitely parvo as the vaccine company carried out tests and then paid for subsequent treatment. This was out of goodwill however, as far as I know they found nothing wrong with the vaccine. It was in an area with a high prevalence of parvo and I believe rotties are also more susceptable to the disease. We changed protocol then and recommended a booster at 6mths also. as they say no vaccine is 100% effective, maybe this pup just didn't have a strong enough immune response? Had the other sick vaccinated dogs been done at 8 and 10 wks aswell? Interesting topic.

Re: Parvo again!

We give DHPPI+L at 8 wks then at 12 wks.. but we say they wont be fully protected until a week after the 2nd vacc so dnt be walking on the streets n parks until then.. ive never had suspected parvo since ive been ere (just over a year)...

Re: Parvo again!

Does anyone practice the three vaccine? 8,12,16wks?

Re: Parvo again!

With the newer vacc pups can be fully vacc at 10 weeks rather than 12, depending on brand used.

Any results on tests. We are seeing lots of Parvo, some in vaccinated pups.
