it depends whether you want to be paid or not, but a few years ago (pre VN times!) I went out there for 6 months. Was only meant to stay 6 weeks as a tourist so I didnt get a work visa, and it is hard to get one when you are actually in the country (or it was at the time). I found out about WWOOFing, which is where you do some volunteer work, mostly on places like farms, for your food and accommodation. Occasionally they pay you as well but they arent meant to so is usually on the quiet if you put yourself out for them etc. Is a variety of different places, I had some amazing experiences working with horses out there via this method. The link below will take you to their website and explain a bit more about it.

http://www.wwoof.co.nz/

Alternatively get a working visa before you go! Jobs are posted up at auckland central backpackers hostel (they have a jobs place) and they tend to be for transient, seasonal work for places like farms/bars etc and for all over nz.

I loved it, and am now thinking of moving there with my fiancee in the next few years! enjoy your holiday :-)
