Is anyone out there a chinchilla owner?
My housemate is keen to get a chinchilla but I own two cats. Obviously my concern is that the cats will result in undue stress to a chinchilla which would be unfair and unethical. Does anyone out

Re: Chinchillas and cats

Thank you both for your help!

I'm very sorry about Benson - that is very sad to hear.

It's reassuring to know that cats and chinchillas are capable of living peacefully (although I imagine that it is easier when both are very young). It's something that I'm now happy to consider.

A few incidences when my chinchilla would be free roaming my cat as a kitten would be found in his cage! They used to play together and at night my cat would sleep next to his cage, I had to stop this eventually as Benson my chinchilla chewed off all my cats whiskers on the RHS of his face!! They loved each other but they were both brought us together as babies as got them both around 6 weeks of age at near enough the same time. Sadly benson died of a diaphragmatic hernia 2 years ago :-( xox

Re: Chinchillas and cats

Hi Rachael :)

I own both a cat and chinchillas. In a way im quite lucky due to the cat showing no interest in the chinchillas, but then my chinchillas are qute layed back also! Suppose the main thing is that you are able to seperate the two? At night and when we're at work, my chinchillas and the cat are seperate. However, if the cat (or dog) gets too close they most certainly pay the price!! We have had a couple incidents of nipped toes and ears!

I suppose it just comes down to the individuals. My cat grew up with the chinchillas and the chinchillas grew up with the dog, i guess giving an advantage?

Hope this helps a little
