I've just handed my draft copy in and I really don't think I've done very well. I'm finding it very hard. Have you completed your vn19 exam yet? Would you be able to give me any tips that could help me a little?

I have the Ethics, Law and the Veterinary Nurse book by Sophie Pullen and it is very good and is helping me out. I also have a copy of the code of conducts for VN's. I will have a look at the RCVS website as advised.

I have decided to do 3 cases of best practice and how this could potential go wrong. I then have to discuss my eithical and moral thoughts on euthansia, I have got loads of info on that. As I have been getting on the assignment this week, it is making more sense, It is just really hard, but I am getting there.

Thanks once agian, good to know i can turn to people who have been through it already

Re: VN19 Preparing for Professional Registration assignment

Ethics, Law and the Veterinary Nurse very good read it even if u dont need it for college yet !!

Re: VN19 Preparing for Professional Registration assignment

the disciplinary pages of the rcvs website are quite useful, if you can trawl through the cases and find one with similar circumstances, or one that reflects upon a nurses decisions.

Re: VN19 Preparing for Professional Registration assignment

I did this assignment last year at college. Our lecturer split the learning outcomes over 3 tasks.

Task 1 was to talk about euthansia in practice and the ethical schools of thought.
The ethical schools of thought are based on 2 theories utilitarianism (sp?) and deontology.
Task 1 also mentioned having to discuss duty of care to patients and staff which then followed on to the animal welfare act and maintaing CPD.

Task 2 we had to discuss consent forms and informed consent.

What is the importance of obtaining a consent form?
What factors could affect informed consent?
* Do the staff have the knowledge to admit patients and know what is expected when admitting and obtaining consent?
* Emergency situations - make sure all relevant details are obtained with a signed form.
Sometimes in emergencies, things can be rushed.

Task 3, we had to research and discuss whistle blowing in practice and what the practice protocol was with regards to whistle blowing. We had to create a scenario and then discuss what we would / could do if we were caught up in such scenario.

My scenario was something along the lines of:
"A veterinary surgeon has committed fraud and dishonesty by stealing and selling on controlled drugs from the practice and writing them down as being used under a client/animal account. A veterinary nurse has caught the surgeon falsifying records and taking controlled drugs on 2 occasions now but doesn’t dare say anything as she doesn’t want to risk losing her job or the respect of her colleagues if no-one else believes her."

My lecturer said this was a good one to work with because i could discuss what organisaions can help her... BVNA and RCVS etc.

Have a look at:

http://www.rcvs.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/advice-notes/ (Advice note 30 – whistle blowing)

RCVS Guide to professional conduct – PART 1 D Consent

Sorry if ive babbled on, hope some of that might help things, im not sure how college have set yours out.

Re: VN19 Preparing for Professional Registration assignment

Hiya,
I have just completed the transition course so have completed this assignment recently.
I found that Ethics, Law and the Veterinary Nurse was the best book out there, i'd highly recommend getting your hands on it if you could. My college ordered extra copied for the library it was in such high demand!
That book should give you inspiration on how to write about the impact on VNs.
Also try Veterinary Ethics by Legood. It wasn't quite as helpful but still good for referencing.
:)
