I don't have a clue with regards to the rules and regulations of this so i'm not gonna pretend to but what I do know is that a local breeder in my area was reported to the VMD for doing vaccinating their own dogs and they subsequently got into a bit of toruble for it. This breeder was bringing in their vaccines from the states (galaxy I think)....anyway I can't remmeber much more than this as it was like 7 years ago but I do know they got into a bit of trouble for it.

I nearly got into a real pickle vaccinating one of our family dogs. She was registered where i worked but was aggrophobic and noise phobic so I vaccinated her at home. She was fit and well if slightly portly. I've vaccinated my own animals for years as have many other nurses I know. However this collie became polydipsic later in the year and was diagnosed with diabetes. She was insured with a well known company. I rang for a form and was told my policy was void because she hadn't had a health check. After much debate I had to get a letter from a vet and a VN who knew me to say that I was of sufficient good character and a qualfied VN to have vaccinated the dog as stated. Fortunately we got someone on the phone with common sense and all was fine.

Thank you for posting that bit - its what I was saying on another thread and was pretty much told I was wrong. I dont know if the situation has changed yet but certainly in 2007 I know that there were breeders in my area (Lincolnshire) going over to Ireland and buying their vaccines otc from pharmacies and bringing them back to vaccinate theirs and friends dogs and they had created their own vaccination records for puppies they sold as well.

Vaccine cards aren't a necessity. My dog has never had a vaccine card, she is fully vaccinated but I know she'll never be going into kennels so I don't need proof of vaccines.

Naughty naughty!! Agree with Gillian! Did she vaccinate off the premises - like in the owners home?? If so, how did she get hold of vaccine and syringe? and dispose of it?

This is a difficult area. It is not illegal per se to vaccinate your own animal. Farmers do it all the time. However, a vaccine is a POM so should have been prescribed by a VS and the animal should be 'under their care'. In a herd situation a knowledge of the health of the whole herd is appropriate. For an individually owned animal, then you should have examined that animal. However, how you define a dog breeder is the difficult bit.

Unfortunately yes and it was collected from its mum and vaxed and wormed on the first night in its new home. I understand why you were able to inj your own dog as the vet was in front of you and was certain the vaccine actually went in the dog. Im talking about admin staff and not even reception trained. This is to be a working dog so i do hope the second inj is followed up correctly for it own sake.

Are you sure the puppy hasn't been health checked by a vet? I'm only saying this cos I vaccinated my own dog this year, and I'm not qualified yet, but the vet had health checked her, was in the same room (actually restraining my dog for me) and asked if I wanted to practice s/c injections.

Sometimes ppl say things like that to "big up" a situation - it might be like my experience.
